Hello All, Hope someone can maybe shed some light??

89 GQ Patrol tb42 Pet/gas

Was out bush last weekend & running on Gas, on the track out I had a Couple of Backfires (Pop through aircleaner sound) So switched back to petrol, All fine, On the blacktop I switched back to gas & was running fine until It just cut out without warning as I was cruising to a stop. Tried to restart on Gas & it was cranking over but it was like the lpg was empty? I knew there was @ least 1/4 tank though. Switched back to Petrol & ran fine & as normal. On the way home I stopped @ the servo & put $20 Lpg in just in case the tank gauge was faulty? Still cranks but as though there is no lpg?
Thinking it was electrical?? I have searched through as much as I can see All electrical side of things seems fine, when I flick it to gas I can here the solenoid clicking over. I switched it over to gas straight away while still on petrol in my driveway & it usually splutters until petrol runs out & gas cuts in but just ran out of petrol & died! Ok I am thinking now Converter??? On the converter I found A screw?? with a flat head with a spring under it which I can just loosely press in & out?? this is on the flat side of the converter which has no connections to it?
All other connections to the converter seem fine..

Also, the past few weeks I have noticed when running on gas (especially with air-con on) If I put the accelerator down quickly it hesitates & surges??

Ok, Hope someone has the solution???

Does it have a solenoid on the tank. From what you said it sounds like there is no gas getting to the convertor.

HI Kyle, Yes it does Mate, I have checked all the wiring around the tank as well & all seems Ok, All earths are fine & wiring is not frayed or loose at all from what I have traced??
About 300mm from the tank the wires are in a rubber tube to about 300mm from the converter. Don't see how any wires could have a problem from the tank to converter as they are concealed very well from any possible damage?? Although the lpg system has been in for over ten years??? Replaced Tank & Converter 3 years ago though.

When it backfired it might of wrecked the diaphram in the mixer and could be sucking air in. I played with the mixture screw on mine and adjusted it
to much and it showed no sign on firing. And i think correct me if im wrong
but the mixture screw on top of the mixer adjusts the air gas mix.

Does the solenoid click at the tank? Is there a filter on the solenoid under the bonnet ? Try cracking the gas line into the convertor & see if gas comes out, you only need to loosen it a bit. If no gas comes out check the solenoids.

Why is it ppl find LPG so hard to service ????


If it was a petrol problem ......... how would you go about solving the problem ????
You'd drop a fuel line off @ the carby /injector rail and check for petrol wouldnt ya

SO...................

crack the LPG supply line nut on the converter & turn the key to the on position breifly ...... there should be a shot of liquid gas squirting out.

IF NOT then you have a problem from the tank to the converter.

IF there IS a shot of gas then the problem is converter to mixer.

WARNING: do this in a WELL VENTILATED AREA with NO NAKED FLAMES OR SPARKS.

To check the converter disconect the supply line at the mixer,
turn the key to the start position and have a mate "smell" for LPG

If no smell is smelt then the problem is in the converter
if LPG is smelt then the problem is mixer related.

WARNING: LPG sniffing is not recomended

Things to check:

Electrical bad earths in tank / converter solinoids ( common )
Crushed LPG supply line from the tank ( occasional )
Blocked solinoid filter ( rare )
Converter "waxed up" ( common )
Converter diaphram broken ( occasional )
Mixer diaphram broken ( common )

Thankyou Everyone for the reply's, I have exhausted everything with my limited knowledge, So I will just have to take it down to a Gas Mechanic, I don't really want to play around with Gas itself..
