Want some work done

I am seriously considering getting my 3.0l rebuilt, reductiong gears and a rear locker for my lil paj. I am guestimating a cost of around the 5g mark, was just wondering if any of you know of a place that is good at working on these pajes on the eastern side of melbourne? I would also prefer all the work to be done at the same place for the convience factor, and might be able to get a decent price on labour...

Had my 3.5 rebuild done by Officer Smith in WestMelbourne - did a great job.
Talk to Brian or David about it - they both have had Pajs.

Know your looking for the east side but these guys are capable of all your requests

I think your guesstimate may be a little low. Realistically, I'd expect reduction gears and locker (fitted) to run around $1500 each / $3k total, and any V6 rebuild under $2k wouldn't be worth the money.

If you bite the bullet and do much of the labour yourself, your budget should allow change - by rebuilding the engine yourself, and paying only for parts/machining. If you can use tools, a Gregory's manual (and your OL membership :D ) should see you through.

My 2c,

Scott

Rick,

You'll be looking at anywhere upwards from 3k, most probably up to 5 for an engine rebuild.

The gears about 1k and the locker about 650.

The locker job would take around 8-10 hours depending on the experience the guy has so allow about 700-900 in parts and labour for that, (oils, seals etc).

The gears are also a bit of a pain in the arse to do, Frank gave me a hand installing mine, and even with a group of pretty mechanically minded guys and his experience it took some time and requires custom grinding etc.....I think he knows someone who does them for a charge so you may want to touch base with him.....

Good luck mate!!!

Dang, for some reason I had thought that 3g for a rebuild would be enough.

I had a quote from frank a while ago for the crawler gears 1g or so, and I was happy to put a grand towards the lokka.

The engine is still happy but it has done 350 000 so a rebuild wouldnd go astray.

Daryus, since seeing your beast climb over those boulders at the powerlines ive been dying for some crawler gears, I think the time is getting closer :)

if your paj has the rear lsd, would you be better going for a front locker instead?
if i remember correctly Ian Sharp(who has twin lockers) has stated thats the way he would go with a std setup car(appologies Ian if that statement is incorrect).

Yea, im still tossing up with whick diff to lock. I originally wanted to lock the front, but then I would want to rebuild the rear anyway. Its a hard decision at the moment.

The gears themselves are around $1k. Remove box, rebuild, and install adds to the cost. Including the reconditioning (thanks Frank :D ) and installing (I don't have the right equipment at home) it ran to over $2k - and I reckon I got a good price, but I did bugger all of the work.

Locker: I love the rear lsd/front locker combination - the rear lsd is "always on" so there's no decisions to be made, and it's surprisingly effective. I've had to convince people I don't have a rear locker, even without the front engaged. AFAIK, my lsd is still original after 150k km - FWIW.

So, go the front locker! RRP is around $1200. I removed my front diff myself (that was fun! ) and had the locker installed for $120. Compressor, tank, relays, solenoids switches etc could be anywhere from around $200 up.

Another 2c spent...

Yeah but the $1200 is only if you want a air locker. Save yourself the grief and get something that won't blow up on you. :) :finger:

I had mine (mechanical Lokka from 4wd systems in South Aus) taken out and redone a few months back, now its like its not even there when you steer, but still locks up like no tomorrow.

Of course I am sure there will be those who disagree.......hehehe

im all for the lokka and they have come down in price these days ....

mine hasnt let me down - apart from spitting the drivers side front axel ...but i fixed that by replacing the whole from diff from cv to cv from my donor "rolled" car :)

i just gotta save for the reduction gears :(
