G'day all,
Im sure everyone will have different views. But thats what I want to hear, and why you would go either way.
After the VY SS ute pissing me off I have been lookin around at a decent rig. Either a 4.2 GU patrol ute or a RV cruiser ute. Are the Turbo Diesel RV's intercooled also or not??
I owned a old Petrol 45 series about 5 years back when I first started driving. And have always liked cruisers. But the Patrols seem to be the cheaper option and have heard some good things about them. Also I have found that cruisers seem to hold there value, whereas Patrols tend to loose it. (Correct me if im wrong)
I'm half keen on this cruiser here which is down in Sydney.

I think either way, Patrol or Cruiser Im going to have to head interstate to check them out as there is shit all up here in QLD at the moment.
What do ya fellers think of the cruiser in the add?? It's pretty much set-up and I wouldnt have to do a thing.
Thanks a heap in advance.
Have a bloody top weekend.
cheers.

Depending on what style of driving you want to do, some Patrols have coil rears. Other then that this thing seems pretty well set up, I didn't notice if it was factory turbo or not, price if turbo seems pretty good but you would've done more research then me.
Add some lockers and you're good to go.

is the vehicle in the ad a turbo or not? it does not say in the ad, and 50K+ is a LOT to spend on a non turbo with 60,000km. Looks like a bit of a poser rig to me, pigs and dogs notwithstanding.
79 series turbos are NOT intercooled from the factory, and it shows especially in warmer weather or on long hillclimbs. But it is still a far better engine than the patrols, and if you have any interest in fuel economy, the cruiser is the clear winner there. comfort wise patrol utes have coil rear but the NVH or the cruiser is far superior.
cheers

G'day DD,
Yeh mate the vehicle in the add is a factory Turbo.
You said the engine in the cruiser is stronger, could you please elaborate on he engine comparison between the two vehicles?
The main thing that is makin me question buying the cruiser is they are leaf sprung in the rear.
Is there anyone out there that has had major problems with either vehicle??? I'm wanting to hear people experiences with either of the vehicles.
Thanks a heap fellers, its greatly appreciated.
cheers, Tommo.

the Nissan engine is basically the same engine they have been selling for 20 years. It is a pushrod engine with indirect injection and 2 valves per cylinder. It makes about 116kW/340Nm and will do it at about 13 - 14l/100km. The toyota, also 4.2 litre, is overhead cam, direct injecton, 4 valves per cylinder, and makes around 125kW and 390Nm and do it at 11 - 12l/100km. (I'm going off the top of my head for those figure so if you care a lot about that sort of stuff, look them up!) Thew Nissan is also heavier so performance wise it's not even on the same page.
as for the leaf rear end, the 78/79 series has the longest leaf springs of any toyota 4WD and they travel and ride very well, and can handle a serious load without the truck dragging it's bum like a dog with worms. The coily Nissan rides marginally better with no load on but does not feel as stable with a load on.
Drive both and you will see why the Toyotas demand higher prices.
cheers

also the patrol motor is a real workhorse motor that has been tryes and proven ,the cruiser motor however is more hi tech with many more things to go wrong. If you want to do some real 4wding in a rig that won't let you down go the patrol. If you want to go faster and be a bit more of a fuel miser go the cruiser .Toyota's demand higher prices new because they advertise more and if you tell sheep that something is the best they start beleving it.

reality is this, the patrol is built like a brick shytehouse, engine is very very reliable, simple to service and assambled ans dissasembles simply. Its heavy, and its powerful. boost the turbo 4.2 and your screaming.
transmission is chalk and cheese between the two, the patrol has a truck transmission
and the diifs, NO comparision again, Miles stronger than anything that toyota has.
for those that spring up and say whooohooo toyota can be upgraded to longfileds, whoopdi dooo they fix the matchstick toy CV's and if you really wanted to , you can install them into gu housings aswell.
so what if it sucks a bit of extra juice, its a better vehicle, looks a million times better and its cheaper.
as a wise man once said " JUST DO IT "

this is a hard topic, nissan boys love there's toyota boys love ours.
depends what you want to do with it. If you want a car that has coil rears and can be comp ready with little fuss then go the nissan as the amount of comp drivers will clearly tell you. If you are doing more beating around the bush than hardcore wheeling and still want the load carring go the yota. Drive both and see which you like. That is one tidy looking ute though. offer him 50 flat.
