Ive just been to Vicroad to register my car, and they cant find the VIN on the chassis. Aparently it should be on the passenger side rail, in the wheel arch, but its not. They cant/wont register it until, they can see it...... Can anyone suggest where else it might be?

The car is a 1990 Maruti Gypsy (LWB Sierra) with 1ltr running gear

Cheers

sorry I meant to say drivers side, its not there (or on the passengers side). It should be on the outside of the chassis rail shouldn't it, ie next to the wheel

I'm guessing that being a MAruti it could be anywhere if it had it at all. Where did you buy the car from, do they have it on record?

It was a private sale unregistered, it has been rego'd before with number plate NYY it was built in 1990 so I think it would have had an earlier rego number before the NYY rego (in other words it has been to vicroads at least once after it was purchased new..... I think), VIN number is on the old rego sticker and compliance plate, checked out ok from a vicroads security check. It was last registered in 2003.

On second thoughts maybe it has never had one, when I registered my patrol, they didn't even look at the car, this was in 2005, and about 7 years ago my girlfriend registered an old lancer, they couldn't find the VIN so they gave her a new one and told her to take it to a mechanic and get it stamped in (it did have a VIN already though, so now that car has 2 VIN numbers)

Maybe Vicroads never used to check properly, or if they did check, whoever looked at my car couldn't be bothered trying to find it and just passed it anyway

Does anyone know if Im allowed to stamp the number on myself, if I cant find it and the chassis doesn't have any other numbers on it?

I know what the VIN is, the Vicroads inspector needs to see it on the chassis to get it registered.

dumbest idea i have ever heard, attempting it would only aggravate the situation, after all VIC roads already checked it.

Thankfully Rhett knew were it was. If no one didn't there would be other options before exploring the last resort of 'finding it' in a spot that vic roads did not check when you were there
