Devastating gearbox problems

Hi all,
I drive an NA Pajero with a 4D56 TD engine in it. My car is not necessarily a bad car, but I seem to be going through gearboxes like there is no tomorrow. I am coming up to the time when I will be replacing the 4th gearbox in 4 years... I don't want to sell my car but it may be the only option  What do I have to do to prolong the life of my gearboxes? I have been reading other forum entries on other Mitsubishi gearboxes lasting 150-200,000K but mine seldom last more than 2 years :? :? So what is it that I am doing wrong? I am constantly checking my fuel economy figures so it's not like I drive to fast or anything and I maintain my car every 10,000k. Do I sell it and loose thousands and thousands of dollars or do I try to fix it again... :?: :?: Is there any other (eg later model gearboxes) boxes that will be more reliable, is there anything else I should know? Where is the best place to take my car in Melbourne? Thanks in advance, Sam

Look into putting a gen2 box in onto your transfer, they are far stronger.
They don't quite bolt straight up but a good garage could work it out.
I have done the reverse, a gen1 t/f on my gen2 box.
If you are going to continue to run old poop you need to learn how to carry out some of these repairs yourself. Maybe a night course in car maintainance or similar. Otherwise it could be cheaper to just buy a much newer vehicle with increased strength and reliability.

Are you going through second hand boxes or reconditioned ones. If you keep replacing them with second hand units then maybe its time to go re-co.

The V5MT1 tranmission box fit's straight behind the 4D56 engine, because Gen2 NH Paje has that setup originaly.... one reason that older paje transmissions popup, driving under 2250 rpm's with the 5th gear, or towing heavy loads with the 5th gear. Also the gearbox used in the NA pajero are originaly from a gen 3/4 Sigma/Eterna/Galant..... using a 2 wheeldrive box in a 4by4....

Do you rest your hand on the gear lever while driving ?

I dont really rest my hand on the gear lever, but I guess I just had abad run with gearboxes. I just bought the final phase 1 NG Paj, which cant drive because of it's engine (or lack of) so I guess I have to sort out some other issues now. Anybody assistance would be much apprieciated. Thank you
