33" tyres

Looking at putting 285/75R16 tyres on the patrol which I understand is about 33".
What does everybody do about the legality of these? In Queensland the limit is that the outside diameter of the tyres can only be 15mm more the the original equipment. Original is 275/65R17 (OD 790mm). 285/75R16 equates to an outside diameter of 833mm (an increase of 43mm).
Worried less about getting pulled up by the cops and more about insurance implications and getting a claim rejected!
Any advice given you see plenty of trucks out there with oversize tyres?

These are CIRCUMFERENCE not DIAMETER

Ring the insurer and let them know you have put that size tyre on the vehicle and have this noted on your policy, it won't be a problem.

My car apparantly has a small suspension lift (50mm?).
Will there be any problems (clearence, etc) fitting 33"s to it on standard rims?

I have them. Yes it is illegal. My insurance company knows and doesnt seem to care, although they havent had to pay out on a big accident.
33"s the cops dont seem to blink at. 3"'s they do, but it depends on condition of car, driving behaviour etc.
To be perfectly legal you need to keep your tyres down to about 32.4" (822.9 mm). The closest legal tyre to this size I can think of would be a 275/75/16

Actually the 03 DX with wide wheel pack, St & Ti GU have 285/75R16 as OEM fittings, so this should be fine legally if you have a GU. I know this cause I have the brocure in front of me from when I got mine.

going from that does it mean that we can go bigger than 285/75/16 on a GU?

What insurance company do you use, we tried Suncorp here in Brisbane but they said they would not cover us?

Where does the 15 mm increase come from? the only infomation ive found for 4wd vehicles in qld is an increase 1.5 times the widest optional factory tyre in GQ case 10.5's were the option, the diameter increase only applies to cars.

See link below, it appears to apply to 4wd passenger vehicles but not light commercials. Not sure what applies to light commercials, but it might not be a problem for them.

Extract from document:
The following sub-sections outline the legal requirements
for replacement rims and tyres fitted to a passenger car
or derivative, or an off-road passenger car (but not light
commercial), which will ensure your vehicle continues to
comply with Queensland legislation while allowing for
your individual preferences.
The rim diameter may be varied from the standard size
but the overall diameter of the tyre must not vary by
more than +15mm or -26mm.

To be 100% sure get the car engineered with the larger wheels on it. If thats not really an option then risk it the cops wont really pick it and if you did have a bust up change the before your car was looked at by the insurance people. If though it was so badly beaten up that the wheels can't be changed count yourself lucky to still be alive.

Would this tire placard help if you can find it in aussie.
265/75x16 = 32's.
245/85x16 = 32's

I have 33's on my GQ. Have only a 2" Suspension Lift and it clears easily. 33's on a GU will go with-out lift.
From my research, the Insurance Company only cares about Rim Size (width to be more precise). From my research they won't insure a 15x10 on a GQ but will a 15x8. They don't care about the tyre size.
However, if your tyre size exceeds the Legal size, your insurance is as good as void anyway!
Take your chances.
