I thought they were zero lash ie hydraulic lifters and therefore no clearance....

hmm man it has been a long time since i played wity ha holden v8, but some hydrolic lifters still need to be adjusted, IE chev smallblock.
best way to adjust them is to start the engine and wind the rockers in til the noise stops.

Are you sure it has a solid cam and lifters? I don't think it will have, not unless it's a very expensive motor, there will be clearance as it is at the mo if it hasn't been started, once fired up they will clatter for a while till the lifters bleed and build up pressure.

Cheers, Jeff.

actually its not rough at all. Its a good way to adjust your cleanances, just takes more time.

No hydro lifters so you must have solid, and if they are, the rockers have to be adjustable. If there are hydro lifters with non adjustable rockers no adjustmeant is needed. If hydro lifter and roller rockers are use, the lifters require a pre load of 1/4 to 1/2 turns of adjusting srew.
If its a crate engine it have been done allready!

Had a MQ with 308 red in it.

Had hydrolic lifters.

Still taped...

So....

Get the lifter bridges off, grind them down VERY MINIMALLY at the base of the bridges where the screws go through, (by this i mean 1/4 of a mm each time). Make sure u wear them down evenly...

Test them out, they will adjust usually within 15 secs to the new clearance. If the noise still there on that lifter, redo procedure..

(to test which lifter it is, take rocker cover off, use long screwdriver and place the screwing end on the non-moving part of the lifter (in the centre) while it is running... U will clearly hear the differences)

Hope that helps.

OK heres the low down , If it ain't got adjustable rocker arms it ain't got solid cam !!!! :? :? :? It will have a hydraulic cam , in firing order check the crush on your lifters they should have half a turn on the pedistal bolt EG: if No 1 is rocking No 4 will be firing so check no 4 . If you can't work this out you should not be looking at it. HAS IT GOT OIL PRESSURE ??????? The oil pump may not have been packed at the rebuilders and may need to be pressure bled. :!: :!:

But a standard 308 has paired rockers with an alloy pedestal that gets bolted up with no adjustment possible.

Cheers, Jeff.

you can do a minor adjustment by removing the rocker posts and filing a small amount off the bottom.... done it before with great success. Or it could be like tuffzook said...... oil pump not pre-packed. packing it with vaso helps :D and, if you have a little left on your hand and don't want to waste it, grab a Picture mag and a little privacy :D

Used to do this when I first started doing V8 holden motors.... I found that the vas tended to clog up the smaller oil galleries and restricted flow, mind you the pressure reading was excelent as a result.

These days I unscrew the oil pressure switch from the oil pump,

Install a standard air fitting that you'll find on any air tool,

Then simply connect a bit of hose ( the clear airline is excelent )

and then attatch the other end to a high vacume point on the carby,

Crank engine over till oil rushes up the clear plastic hose .... but stop cranking before it makes the carby !!! (You'll need to be quick on the key too by the way otherwise the oil will make the carby and you'll smoke the neighbors out for several blocks !! )

Then remove the air fitting and hose and re-install the oil pressure switch

I've found this to be the easiest way, the quickest way, and most trouble free way of getting oil up,

Kingy

This tip isnt "common knowlege" so keep it under ya belt ;)

OMG! Thats a fantastic idea! I have to fit a 2nd hand motor into a VQ statesman at work next week and im gona do that instead of priming the pump with happy fat....... Thanks!

P.S. Your secret is safe with me ;)
