Hey guys.
ive been looking around the place and as i need a new cw/pinion for my rear diff ive dcided on an upgrade.
Ive now found a lsd to suit NT 1.3 sierra which is pretty much spot on for my needs.
firstly. How much should i look at paying for one?
second. How good are they and are they easily rebuilt?
Thirdly if someone have a good cw/pinion set for sale cheap im ken for some.
Cheers
John

I would expect to pay between $300 - $450 for a new LSD centre. Crownwheel & pinion can be had from various suppliers for $250 - $350 new. Shorter ratios EG 4.57:1 & 5.38:1 & 8.00:1 ! are available at extra cost.
I would go for a Powertrax or Lockright locker. Cheaper, positive traction and no clutches to replace. Look on Ebay.com (USA) theres a few Suzuki Samurai (US Sierra) suppliers.

Hey John,
Give me a tooth count on the crownwheel and pinion, I might have some that you can have for the cost of freight I cant charge you for the R&P cause I dont know if its any good.
Auspost From 2905, you can work out the postage.

cheers for that.
the only reason im looking at the lsd type centre is i need a crown wheel and pinion regardless what i do.
if i was to find some resonable non whineing ones then the centre would be welded while out for the change over.
who the hell in their right mind would want 8.00:1 diffs!?!?!?!?

id love to give you a tooth count but its still in the housing as i drive it daily and cant really afford to have it in bits.
im guessing they will be the stock 3.9 ratio....as everything else is/was stock on it when i got it.

If I had a space framed 47" tyred rockcrawler, I'd want 8.00:1 diff gears. USA is a lot bigger market than Aust.

Who sells/makes 8:1 diff gears ? I am sure you can get t\case gears that low .. but for the diff the pinion would look more like a cutting burr.

Where have you found an LSD for a Zuk, as they are not a very common item and were horrendously expensive as an opotion from Suzuki.
Alot of wreckers that are not familar with Suzukis think that the rear centre is an LSD by looking at it, as the hemisphere casing is soild (like Yota and Nissaan LSD's)

If you had zook diffs with that ratio, you would smash the pinion as soon as you tried to drive, as it would be so small.
Even with a LSD, in the end this will only limit the slip left to right. To make a real difference and keep it there (LSD will wear out over time, and $$ again to fix) get a locker.
Layto....

if you were running 47" tyres you wouldn't be using Sierra diffs. I think you'll find the 8:1 gears are for a t/case not the diffs

Ditto - a mate thought the same for mine.

I can't find the site I was looking at but it was in the US. 4.57, 5.38, 5.83, 6.11 & 8.0:1 were all available as CROWNWHEEL AND PINION SETS. i've never seen a transfer case that uses a crownwheel. I don't make, sell or use 8.00:1 gears and I'm not telling anyone that they are great, i simply said THEY ARE AVAILABLE. I'll keep looking and if I find them again I'll post it.

5.83 is as low as they go, they are made pretty soft as well to keep the teeth from breaking easily on the pinion gear.

I am guessing is the site you were looking at .. seems to mention all those numbers .. but in the 1000's of hours at work I have wasted webwheeling I have never even heard mention of diff gears that low..

Dana's will go that near that low (7.71 in 60's and 70's) , but on a zook diff, its next to impossible to make a ratio that low and now smash the pinion due to it being impossibley small and weak. 8:1 is available as a tcase option, so i would guess its either a reading or typo error somewhere.

The only LSD's I have seen for sierras were about $1200 over 10 years ago. Personally, I am not a big fan of LSD's- IMHO they only really work properly with the wheels on the ground (i.e when there is only a small difference between wheelspeeds) If an LSD is tight enough to work properly with a wheel in the air, it will behave much like a spool on road on a car as light as a sierra.
My money would be on a spool (trail tough, $99USD) or an air locker.
Both give predictable behaviour, on and off road.
Just my 2C worth.

ok thanks for the replies guys.
Ill be giving the lsd a miss.....my welder will do a much cheaper job and just as good off road.
not overly fussed bout how it is on road

I have welded quite a few diffs, and sierra rears do weld quite well, but be aware of a couple of catches - the diff centre has to come out to weld, so unless you know a friendly diff specialist, you might a) endanger your new R&P with a poor set up, or B) leave enough spatter/slag in the centre to fall out and wreck the bearings/R&P when it smashes through everything.
Most reputable diff shops will be very reluctant to fit a welded diff.
Also, welded diffs can break the whole carrier in 1/2, once again, normally trashing the R&P when they go.
That said, I haven;t really done anything special when I have done them, just been careful and tried to work clean. some of them have lasted years, but I would get a trail tough spool rather than weld - they are a very nice product.

In all fairness, it really depends on what the sierra is being used for, on roads (sealed/gravel/dirt) a welded diff is not really a good option, you sacrifise safety and handling.
sure you can say that you don't notice the effects but i got stock tyres, stock diff AND a swaybar and still managed to slide my sierra 270 degrees at approx 60kms in the wet across 5 lanes including the mediam strip at a bend near St Ives. If you've owned a sierra for 3 yrs i'm sure you have enjoyed hydroplanning at least once.
Welding a diff is a cheap way to gain an edge off road for a weekend wheeler, if you are clocking 200k's a week or more on the sierra than perharps saving up for a air locker is the better idea, lock it when your wheeling, not when driving.
Now an lsd might not give you the same traction as an locker but it's a pretty good option for someones who want's traction on and off road. Maybe not the 100% of a locker or welded diff off road but better than a welded diff on road or an unlocked diff.
