noise - gearbox or transfer case?

ok after doing lots of searches etc i decided to post up my dilemna.
ever since i got this zook it has made sh1tloads of noise in all gears bar 4th. it is a kind of grinding noise/like sand in the gearbox or something. but 4th gear sounds sweet and smooth.. my mechanic mate says that could be cos 4th has no load on it and its straight through (?) :|

so that being said. i have put the transfer case into neutral and went through all the gears on the spot and the noise isnt there.. that would mean its the transfer case right?? would save me farking about with swapping gearbox at least.

whichever it turns out to be i would swap out the mounts as well and put new ones in there for futures sake.

any input would be good.. or other tests i can do.

cheers

oh and i have replaced all oils in the diffs and gearbox.. cant get the filler plug off the transfer case.. i may just pour it in from the top and see if it gets quieter

i put some moreys in the gbox so will do that for the transfer also. off i go to see whats going on with the beast.

forgot to ask Did u move all bits over from old zook? gbox/transfer

I have a 1.3 transfer spare here at moment ready for when i buy gears that u can install for fault finding if u need it.

Btw - i had same problem, but not as noisy, replaced transfer and prob fixed.

Can you get at the filler plug on the transfer to check fluid levels? With the jammed plug you could weld a bolt to it and replace with a new one. It could just be low on fluid?

Pretty much what ever you do it sounds like you'll have to remove the transfer to check things out. I had a slight noise in my transfer that disappeared with a fluid change. And yeah replace the mounts to save problems later.

nic i left allt he old zook parts in the old zook. i figured this one was sweet due to it being never driven offroad etc.. but it never got any love from that old dude in all the years he owned it (since new)...
i cant get the stupid shifter out still trying.
would be sweet to borrow that transfer if its not just low thanks for the offer mate!

SKB - i would weld a nut on it but i dont have a welder.. may take it to a joint tomorrow if i cant get the shifter out to fill her up.. will know shortly i guess.

Dewse has a transfer with rockhoppers in it :D lets hope mine is farked hehe. :P

I've just replaced the all the oils too, trying to reduce a little driveline noise. Didnt have much success. The filler plug on the transfer case is a bugger to get too. Managed to get it out with a breaker bar on it.

If worse comes to worse why not just pull the transfer case to replace the oil. It only a 5 minute job to pull it out.

Either way you look at it the sucker has to come out or your going to have this problem every time you want to change the oil in the transfer case in the future.

If your anywhere near my area drop me a pm for details and come around.

It may not be pretty when I'm done but I'm sure I can get it out for you without damaging the threads. Even if we need to split the case, I have a couple of spare gaskits around here somewhere.

I would believe your mechanic - Noisy transfers are noisy regardless of the gear the car is in (if the road speed is right) i.e if it is noisy at 60kph in third and fifth, but not fourth, there's no way it is the t/case.

no worries. maybe the noise stopped when the transfer case was in neutral as there was no load on the gearbox bearings? fark knows.. will know soon i guess :D

Yes, It normally would. Often you will get a little quiet spot when you go from power to coast and to overrun when there is no load on the box either.

I just put new gears and bearings in my T-case. I cant believe how much quieter it is. When your driving, try pulling the T-case lever towards you and see if this stops the noise.

PS When I replaced the rear wheel bearings, this also reduced the noise.
If I keep replacing bears Ill soon be able to hear the radio.
