Sticky Brakes?

Howdy ya'll

Something strange is happening to my 98 d/c lux and I am trying to pin point the cause.

The problem happens after going through some water (enough to submerse the wheels) and parking the car for a few days. Every now and then when I start it and go to take off it wont budge. It seems like the brakes have seized or something because it take a bit of rocking in between 1st and reverse before a loud clunk signals im free to go.

Im pretty sure it only happens with the handbrake on so i'm thinking it must be the rear drums??? Is this a normal thing for drum brakes? I'm going to pop them open on the weekend and have a look but thought I would see if anyone else has experienced this before and knows how to fix it.

Thanks
Dane

yeah its is a standard thing for wet drum brakes to lock up when the handbrake is applied for a period of time

after a water crossing you should work the brake pedal a few times before tearing off into the bush again

Don't hurt to wash them out when you get home either as sand and shit will just be like a coarse sand paper on the drum surface mate one after a year of not cleaning them had around a 3mm lip on the drum which makes drum removal a bitch :bad-words:

You need to pull the drums off and clean it all out...lube up things....might be your handbrake cable aswell....

certainly do as sic lux suggested but make sure the shoes are dry or you will have the brakes lock up again with rust ,

if you have a air compressor blow the shoes dry beffore fitting the drum

and becarefull how much lube you do apply to much will/can [ie; never sieze / grease ] melt and get onto your linings :bad-words:

it is best not to lube brake parts as it collects dust n grit
but it is up to you
