are HIDs lights worth the money? or is it better to go helegen?

depends if you got the $$ to spend?? I have HID's in as high/low beams in the 60 and they are good, but I don't quite think they are worth the money. If I had my time again I would probably just get 2 spots and 2 spreads as auxillery lights and mount them on the roof. Narva 175's are about the best value IMO.

Depends on how much night driving you do. I personally will NEVER use halogen again after fitting HIDs to the headlights and driving lights.

Shit yeah.........
You've obviously never driven behind them..... Personally i wouldn't fork out 2G for a set of lightforce HID's. But i've got kits ($200 bucks) from ebay in my Narva's, my IPF's, and my EF high beams. Once you've had them you wont go back. Do yourself a favour and spend a couple of hunjy on a kit and fit them in your existing lights.
Cheers, Dan

Agreed, I just put a set of 48 watters i got as a kit and put them in my XGT's. They were fantastic beforehand, but after putting the HID's in there is no way i could go back.

Yep HID's Rock!

Not the big debate!

What to get

4500k... 5000k.... 6000k....8000k...... etc..

Personally 4500k all the way! they are by far the whitest & brightest

I had a set of them in my standard headlights both hi & low beams & they rock :D but one died on me & havn't got round to fixing it yet

I have a set of 45w 5000k in some narva's and yeah they are good, but too blue already

So yeah hids are the go :D

The 4wd bush mach video 2 shows the differance in normal and HIDs.

They have a car normal headlights go for maybe 100meters.

Flick on the HIDs light for about 1 klm.

There's signs shining up super bright far far down the road.

HID's are coming down in price now anyway. we have some at work that retail for $350ea, they are identical to the CAT hid's that sell for double that price.

4500k to 6000k are best but personally i reckon it depends on the person.
I prefer around 5500k, but then again i am partially color blind so light refracts differently in my retina compared to someone who isn't. This makes the light spectrum APPEAR to be slightly different to what it actually is through the blue/green/purple area and red/brown area. Anything over 6000k is the wank factor. Anything under 4500k is burning hot enough.

Can any halogen light be upgraded using HID kit?? I've got 4x Hella Rallye 4000's, can these be converted? Is HID the same or as good as Xenon gas lamps?

Probably been answered before, but what is the minimum size Driving light that can be/is worth modding to HID?

I originally put my HID kits in old rally 1000's. The difference it made was phenominal. I'd suggest you could convert anything you are using and you would be amazed at the difference. Simply just the color of the light is a pleasure to drive behind.

As mentioned plenty of times LF XGT require a special bracket for the globe. Other than that the HID globes come in all forms, H1 H2 H3 H4 H7 are most common. The only thing is that the HID globe is longer in the body rearward of it's mounting point therefore MOST driving lights require a hole to be drilled in the rear housing to allow for the extra length globe.

HID (High intesity discharge) are Xenon filled globes with an arc ignition. Do not be confused with the Xenon filled globes that run a normal tungsten or quartz filament. These are the same as a halogen globe only filled with Xenon gas.
Hope this help. I would suggest if you are interested but not confident in yourself then call Steve at ON4TOU. Vic. 5977 7968.

Cheers Dan

Cool, thanks buddy. So what your're saying is it's a HID globe. Doesn't need the ballast thingy, etc. which xenons and predators, etc. use. Are these globes heaps better than, say, the 'Phillips blue'?
Jimbo wrote:How do the HID globes stand up after being dunked in water and mud?
This is a good question, cos at those prices you wouldn't want to shatter a globe

No he isnt. What he is saying is dont confuse the normal gas filled globe with a HID gas filled globe that needs the ballast to create the electric charge to excite the gas.
The normal globe still has the filament in the globe that lights up, the gas just helps it burn a little brighter.
The HID ballast creaates a tonne more electrical current than what comes from your cars power source then fires up the gas creating a bloody brite light.

What he said!!

That's right. And as far as dunking them goes, they don't burn as hot as your 100 watters so in theory they should be better.. In saying that anyone with a little bit of common sense, that is going to dunk them, puts a bit of effort into waterproofing there lights regardless of whether or not they are HID's.. But this is also a good reason for the ever increasing move to run HID's on the roof.. To keep them dry.
I'll be running mine up high.
Cheers Dan.

I got a recording of 480 to 502 degrees (centigrade) from a 130 watt H3 bulb running off a 12volt SLA battery.

A 45 watt metal halide H3 bulb didn't get over 120 something degrees centigrade.

...tad bit of difference I reckon.

Clean water is ok but as soon as u get residue on the globe ie: mud it will heat this residue up and will burn thru the glass where dirty. Basically creates a hot spot on the globe until it burns. Like oil from your hands if u touch the lamps!

I have a set of Hella 4000's with the bitdistribuition 50w kit in them. I am pretty happy with them. They will be moved over to the comp car for the paj challenge.
As they fit better in the bullbar than the LF240's, which also look good as HID.

hey Ruffy, $200 you say per kit. Is that per light or per pair? Still is cheaper than buying HID's complete. Will the Narva kits work for a Hella light?

I'm looking to get some lights but don't wanna spend $2k on LF HID's. What lights are a good starting base to buy and then swap in some HID bulbs? And is that all you need to do? (swap bulbs) ?

Basicly any light that is a good light with standard bulbs will be a better light with HIDs in them.
Lightforce are good but not a straight forward swap (need brackets etc)
You can just get any old spottie that takes a h3 or h1 globe and fit the h3 or h1 HID replacement.
You will likely need to drill a hole in the back of the light casing to accept the bigger wiring/grommet but other than that an easy swap.
