				Tyre size Discovery TDI

I am new to the rover forum as i just bought a Discovery Series 1 TDI. Im wanting to go 3 inch coils and 33 inch tyres. Is this a good combination with minimal alteration to the rest of the suspension and no tyre scrub?

3 inch lift will go close to avoiding guard cut, depends on the width of the tyre. 33 x 12.5 will still hit. You probably need 5inch lift overall to give max clearance, and even then you will need to trim the rear quarter section of the rear guard about an inch in at the bottom tapering to nothing over 12 inches up, and perhaps the lower edge of the rear of the front guard. 33 x 12.5s will hit the radius arms but not too badly.
Go for narrower tyres and you might just get them to fit with 3 inch coils.

You will need to cut plenty and probably break axles.

At this stage im lookin at puting 265/75/16 BFG A/T's on the standard 16x7 rims. I think they are about 32" in size.

You need to trim regardless. A spring lift should not affect tyre clearance. You will want to throw a pile of cash into the axles as well.

I have two sets of tyres for our 2" lifted Disco - one 225/75 R16 All Terrains and the other 245/75 R16 Mud Terrains. The ATs are fine at all angles without trimming and I thought the MTs were going to be ok. BUT! We did a driver training course last weekend where there was a cross axle obstacle where all but one car in our group was lifting wheels (a Defender 110), and in doing so ours crunched the rears of the rear guards bad enough for me to come home via Bunnings to get some cut off wheels for the Dremel.
And how big is 245/75? less than 30.5"! You'll be cutting heaps off.

We've also had to wind out the steering stops. More will be needed the bigger you go. Also, you'll want to do your homework on your insurance - go too big and you'll void your policy in most cases because it's not engineered. Same goes for the suspension lift. When I was shopping around at least half the companies wouldn't cover anything lifted more than 50mm.
You'd be surprised how capable a Disco is without going to super big tyres. The diff pumpkins are lined up and shallow anyhow so that's one less problem for you. Another issue is that the steering gets pretty wandery without caster correction above 2" - well so I am told anyhow.

Apart from clearance issues wouldn't a Tdi with stock gearing be pretty gutless on 33in tyres? They did have about 29.5in standard.
I mean more than usual

Here is a list of things you need to do to fit the 33s and maintain driveability and strength:
2.75 inch body lift plus 2 inch spring lift and new shocks and steering dampner - cost say 1500+ for Dobinsons plus time and money for body lift blocks
rear quarter guard trim at least 1'' in at lowermost point tapering up 12'' to to 0 plus front guard trim - not much if at all Cost=time and flare mouldings, say $100 upwards, ignore paint issues
4.11 ring and pinion plus lockers - cause the gearing will be crap, stronger axles and drive flanges (not needed if you are gentle) Cost say 3k upwards to do front and back properly, maybe more
Adjust bump stops out - lose lock, or get 100mm off set rims (which might stress you kingpins and hub bearings at bit) Cost=possible breakages plus rims, say $350 plus
up graded brakes - eg., 110 retro fit on front Cost say $150 second hand
rotate stubs to regain castor angle Cost time DIY or pay someone, maybe $300 or more
Overall cost - would be more than 5K with upgraded drive train etc and as much as 7K or more if you pay for this work to be done
Serious considerations!!
PS we have done this (and more) but relaise the vehicle cost @ 3K to start with, so it was not too much painl.
35x12.5's - well as above but either much more body lift is required or significant guard cutting - at least 2.5" all around on the rear, and from 2 tapering to 1 inch on the front

LOve that Camel truck - how do you go with the wires and the Police etc?
PS 31's should be no major dramas. Just a little trim really!

It's not mine unfortunately! But I should be thankful for our little truck - got a mate looking at Discos and finding one without rust is a challenge at the moment.

The roof around the alpine windows, floors can go if there has been a leaky windscreen or blocked aircon, chassis rust is rare here but does happen, plus the outriggers can go. There can also be some galvanic corrosion in the doors.
Considering that it's easy to prevent, it's a shame to see so many that haven't been looked after well.

Well i ended up getting 285/75/16 on standard disco 16x7" rims. Had to trim about 2" off the bottom of the rear guards and adjust my steering stoppers in on the knuckles to stop them scrubbing the radius arms. (i know, less turning circle, oh well). Cheers for the input

Oh BTW i fitted 40mm springs and 20mm nylon spacers

get off set rims when you can (eg, sunraysia or rockcrawler), and get the steering lock back. 25mm off set is good for 36 inch tyres. 10-12mm is good for 33's. Don't go spacer as they are illegal.

I would like to get better offset rims when i get the cash (and permission from the handbrake!). Until then ill put up with a little larger turning circle
