ARB air locker vs. Lockrite lokka
i have been reading many posts and threads about the pro's and con's of both these units...
i would like to fit a locker to the front of my 60 series and i want to know what people on here think about these two in the front of a 60 ???
what pro's and con's can people think of and who has actually owned one or the other...

Air locker, as YOU controll it.
Have a lockrite in the front of my hilux. It sucks!!!! Steering isn't far off having a welded front diff when in 4WD.
That said Lockrites are way cheaper.

As above...air locker is the way to go.
I have front and rear fitted in my 60 series...and have never regretted spending the money!
Though I am looking at putting 80 series diffs under the 60...so when that is done I will have a front and rear complete (locked) diff for sale. Maybe something worth remembering there

can anyone tell me if you can steer or not with an air locker, when it is locked?
this is one thing i am still not sure about... can you steer or is it just physically harder to turn the steering wheel or does the rig just keep going in a straight line...???
dont mean to sound like an idiot but i am an apprentice and the air lockers are Very expensive to me... ( plus i am having the engine, injector pump and injectors all rebuilt, and getting a new clutch so my funds are running low...)

Iv always been told, "don't bother doing it unless your going to do it properly". My advice, just go without for a little longer to save the extra money you need to get the ARB air lockers. Yes I know its hard, im an apprectice too and in mechanics (the losest paying trade out of them all!). You end up spending less money and time in the long run anyway.

so with the front locked and the steering wheel turned to hard lock the car still wont turn properly...
this is of particular interest to me as i wanna drive it in mud too...
Yeah...it's harder to turn but invaluable when wanting to get where
you wanna be. ie. if you want to skip ruts going uphill/downhill..or
if you need to cross mud filled ruts on the flat.....front locker in,
rear out and your chances are multiplied out of site!

I have a welded rear and a lockrite in the front, it works very well......... BUT it is very big pain in the butt to turn while in 4X4, also very frustrating shifting into and out of 4X4 between tough spots. I also am very tight but I think the frustratiun is gonna get the better of me.

Go the Arb i've only ever had them but a mate of mine has had both in the front first arb then lockite and now he wishes he had the air locker his pro's and cons are locker it's on or off but you have to keep flicking switches where as a lockrite you just drive it the lockrite can break springs and pins which means it just stays locked, lockrite's are cheap but how many pins do you have to break before the time wasted and money spent replacing them out ways forking out for a air locker, so air locker and longfields (Think 60's are same as lux cv's) and you shouldn't have a drama

With the front locked both wheels obviously spini at the same speed. As you should know the inner wheel of the turning arc needs to travel slower than the outer because it has less distance to travel. Therefore the inner wheels usually loses traction because it is 'forced' to spin. We all know that a spining wheel is going to travel in the direction of the greatest force, which when cornering is momentum, so the inner wheel is pushed straight ahead not around the corner. Of course this applies more so on slippery surfaces such as mud and clay. On hard rocky surfaces it just makes it nye on impossible to turn the steering wheel and you find yourself doing eleventy point turns to get around corners.
But if you want to learn the hard way then go and waiste your hard earned bones on a lockrite. Maybe once you wise up a little you'll bung it in the back and put an air locker in the front...
I'm gathering you're an apprentice mechanic??? Here's a little moto for you to carry to work everyday, "Do it once, do it well...."
Don't give in to an inferior job because of cost. If you can't afford to do it properly then you can't afford to do it. You've got a vig task ahead of you with your engine etc. Hold off on a locker until you have the money. Keep your eye out on here and ebay, trading post etc and pick up a second hand one.

btw ive got an auto locker on the front and you've gotta be careful when putting the foot down as the cvs don't like being locked suddenly under full load from engine.
