j20a engine diagnostic codes?

howdy,

in my j20a 97 vitara twice runnig up my "dyno" hill under virtually the same conditions, load, throttle, gear, fuel. it has flashed the check engine for a second after the climb? once before with the stock exhaust & again after fitting a 2 1/4" press bent cat back exhaust with free flowing muffler.

would it be my O2 sensor playing up as it wasn't running hot & it sounded like it still had oil pressure.... the tune sticker under the bonet indicates to bridge 2 points on the diagnostic plug & set timing. but can i get any info from the ecu reguarding fault codes or is that a job for suzuki's factory diagnostic computer?

most of my mates use the same "dyno" for research & development. :D

change of subject what oil should i be running... 10/50?? went in 2 weeks before all this happened is this ok or should i be running 10/30.

sorry for all the questions

most likely your o2 sensor as this won't remain in comp memory.make sure the sensor is a fair way in the extractors as i've seen the welded nuts being too thick.use castrol sinthetic and morreys oil stabilizer and you won't have a problem.

g'day joeblow,
yeah thought it might be o2 sensor, but i still have factory exhaust manifold on it atm & its only done 92,000.
never had a 4x4 with an electronic brain in it so i wasn't sure what it could remember...... damm computers still aren't smart enough.
& what weight castrol would you reconmend?
cheers

The ECM should store the code even if it is only a temporary fault unless the battery has been disconnected then the codes will be wiped. If you ground the diagnostic switch terminal in the monitor connector you should be able to retrieve any codes that have been stored when you then turn the ignition on. It will store multiple codes and display them three times each. You should start by sorting out the most current code displayed first on the check engine light. There are a number of codes relating to O2 sensors depending on the problem.

now the million dollar questions,
does anyone know the codes or can get a copy of them?

what pins do i need to short out, there are 5 pins used in a 6 pin plug & one of them is earth?

or is it not worth the hassel & do let suzuki deal with it?

not sure, this "zook thing" is new 2 me.

i do know the motor is very different to a 1.6 in construction ie: twincam head etc etc.
but not sure about the ECU giving the same sort of fault codes and how to read them.

got the diagnostic codes & was able to pin point the lazy 02 sensor. replaced it with a universal bosch 02 sensor today after swapping between a K&N panel filter & stocker to try and get to log another error.
took it for a quick test drive and it seems more responsive & less hesitant on light throttle.
