I have BJ42 with 4 speed I want to fit 5 speed
The car is basicly standard for road with some trail use.
The std BJ42 5 speed is hard to find
Can anybody advise which box I should use & what is involved.

shorty_f0rty is selling a 5 speed BJ42 for what it'd cost you for the parts alone.

I'm figuring the bellhousing/box+trans would be enough.

Seems an expensive excercise to save approx 400 rpm in top gear.

A bj 73 box fits if you change the top plateand 4x4 lever. I have a bj42 top plate and 4x4 lever if you find a bj73 or 74 5 speed box. I put the bj42 box into my bj 73.
Cheers.
Dave.

You'll need to shorten the rear driveshaft & lengthen the front as well, since the 5 spd box is longer. If you have a PTO winch - it'll need a longer driveshaft too.....

There may be an issue with the cross member and handbrake drum. A mate of mine looked into this a year ago

Crossmember should be in the same place as fifth gear is behind where the crossmember bolts to. would be similar conversion as a 5 speed into a HJ47.

For the hand brake drum just use HJ75 backing plates and try and get them complete with all the levers and springs. Also try and get the tab off the rear diff that the handbrake mounts too or make something similar. Then just use a BJ42 5 speed handbrake cable. I think the part number is 46410-60121, just make sure its for a bj42 5 speed.

the gross member on myn is in the same place to.only mod i had to do was the gear lever is a couple inch back.made up new floor cover.welded bracket on diff.really easy to do.my 5 speed come out of a 60s thats why the gear lever is diffrent. the bjs 5 speed isnt any diffrent in gear lever postion.
