One of the fellas at work currently has a GQ Patrol 4.2 petrol with about 350,000km and is looking to upgrade to a GQ2 petrol again. He's finding that there are a few out there, though just about all of them are autos. He's a manual owner, and loves that the manual has come from the Nissan truck division and is as solid and reliable as they come. As most of the GQ2 petrols for sale are auto, can anybody tell me (to pass on) what the autos background is, what there reliability is like, how they drive and how many gears are in them.
Many thanks.

They have 3 plus an overdrive. If he is solid on a manual go that way because you are limited with how well the auto goes reg big wheels etc.

The autos are great, and excellent offroad..
I'm converting my TD6 to Auto.
Apart from the fact of a fucked leg, I wouldnt go back to manual as a keeper after the GQ Auto I had.. and that ran 35's no problems.
They like to be serviced, and kept cool, $4000 to rebuild completely as awill4x4 found out few yrs back...

auto is the way for me too... i run 5" coils 2 " body lift and 37 mtrs and mine is fantastic. i have changed the gearing in the difs to suit the tyres and mine drives and wheels awsum. used to drive manuals in previous 4bys and i drive a 15 speed road ranger for work but the auto wins out for me..

Adding to my post yes it will run larger tires as has been stated but you would really need to change diff ratios from the standard 3.9 to 4.1, 4.3 or 4.88 that would make a massive difference and is what i want to do to mine 4.88 that is.

yep, had that on the GQ...
Took some getting used to, the gear changes are so much quicker, and a bit rougher until your used to it... I'll give the Auto I buy to Rodney again to check over before installation

I've been running auto for 6 years. 4 of those with 20psi boost (TD42). It has done quite a few comps and I normally run 35x11.5 ET (ie 35.5" tall) I have never thought I needed lower gearing. In fact I normally use high range particulary in comps. It has a manual shift conversion and I've now had it rebuilt and modified to increase strength (mainly torque convertor mods and line pressure). I use Redline synthetic fluid and won't change now. It costs a fortune but you keep using it ie guaranteed for 160,000k. Just collect it when servicing and reuse. I'm so happy with it I'm using the same trans behind my new turboed VH45 ie we are expecting to put around 600hp through it!
