I own a gq with 4.2petrol and rebuilt auto gearbox... the box has only done about 9000klm and is back in the shop cause of an oil leak.. The shop guy reckons i have boiled the oil and blown it out the breather.. they fitted and extra large oil cooler when it was rebuilt and now say i need another one.... also they say that a nissan isnt suited to rough 4wdriving and that 33in tyres doesnt help.
Has anyone else had overheating problems and if so what was done bout it.
thanks heaps

Agreed, he's an idiot.
Have a GQ Auto, Petrol with 33's. Never, ever have had a heating issue with the Auto Box.
Has he re-directed all the cooling to the Oil Cooler? You need to still run it through the Radiator, particularly for low speed work, the Oil Cooler should be additional to the Radiator.
Don't take it sitting down, challenge him.

Agree with the others here. He has stuffed up somewhere, and i trying to pass the buck to you. Plenty of people are daily driving 35's and bigger, wheeling hard etc with auto's and not cooking them. Check as TassieTroll about the cooler re-routing. It should run through the factory cooler, as well as the additional one. If not then it will cook the oil esp at low speed.
Layto....

Nope, proved that one wrong. I run my GQ petrol auto through 2 front mounted coolers and deleted the radiator ones entirely. One is mounted behind the air con pusher electric fan but I haven't even got it wired in yet as my auto stays cool.
Unless you've got a temp gauge on your trans everyone's basically just taking a wild guess that the auto temps are fine.
Towing a 1.6- 1.8 tonnes caravan in 38 degree heat saw auto temps at a maximum of 85 C as soon as I could manually lock up the torque convertor the temps dropped to 55C cruising temps.
Prior to going front coolers entirely and using the radiator coolers and 1 front mount I would see temps of over 100C towing the same van in the hills.
Regards Andrew.

Agreed, he is full of it. See my post in GQ auto's for what I'm doing to one!

One Oil Cooler wouldn't be enough.
I never said two wouldnt work with-out the radiator.

i run one oil cooler and the radiator cooler on 38" tyres with 3.9 diffs..... the hottest it got was driving up whitemans lane the other weekend on a steep rocky bit, and it got to 195 degrees F. Once i stopped and upped the idle to 1,500 rpm for a minute or two it dropped by 20 degrees. On the highway in traffic it runs at about 180.... until i lock the torque converter up, and it drops a heap. One thing that will over heat your trans a HEAP is if your throttle position sensor is not set properly. Mine overheated about 6 times after i did my engine swap....... and it blew the trans cooling line off about 8 times. Once the TPS was set up properly, it never had a problem after that. I'm told that if your trans temp warning light comes on, you have already done damage. Mine came on 6 times
Needless to say, after a while, something went bang in the transmission.

its funny how everyone always jams all their coolers infront of the radiator
for once i'd like to see someone with the cooler in the void behind the headlight.

I don't think you'd get enough air flow there. You need to get them as close to the condenser as possible so that the fan draws the air through.

you would be amazed what kind of airflow you can get in there actually. you have to vent the front part of it just behind the guard, or you can vent it from behind the bar. chuck a manomenter in there and see

Thats where I have mine now, behind the bullbar. My engine temp has RARELY reaches half way since I relocated the trans cooler behind the bar. (TB42 lpg and auto)
I previosly had it behind the left headlight that was OK also, but it ran a little above halfway on the temp gauge.
When I first bought the car, it use to be between the radiator and condensor. I didnt like it there because it damaged my radiator fins and caused it to start leaking and had get it recored.

I'm fitting mine to the deck behind the cab where the radiator for the intercooler is going. Nice and protected and the hose lengths will be about the same. I have a fan for them so air shouldn't be an issue. It is getting the turbo fitted tommorrow and the ecu tuned next week so I'll be know wether it works in about a week or so.

Who has a GQ Stock-o transmission with a Torque Coverter Lock-up kit?
Are they worth it and, if you have one, how does it effect economy/shifts?
Would they cause more wear on the Torque Converter?
Thanks
