hey gang, I've got a tank I wanna use in my truck, I know it'll need to be checked and re stamped, but it has some minor surface rust on outside an I wanna clean it up. If I paint it is there a certain colour it has to be?? (or do the makers just have bulk lots of silver) and could you powder coat the tank?

you will find it hard to get it powder coated due to the backing process, could end up in a nasty bang.

They will repaint it silver once they re test it, i think its to reflect heat and try to keep it cool so the gas doesnt expand too much.

I'm pretty sure that silver is the designated ID colour for LPG. Like maroon for acetylene, black for oxy, green for argon etc.

you can paint it any color you want. I am not sure if the color affects the compliancing but you can paint it black when you get it back.
a black tank will just mean it wont accept as much gas after its been sirring in d sun

By law an LPG storage vessel in a motor vehicle MUST be colored either Silver, Matt silver/Light grey or white.
Oxygen or compressed air in commercial vehicles must be black.
A good part of the reasoning is for identification in emergency situations.

if thats the case, why do they fit black steel bashplates
i think you will find that painting it any colour wont get you into any trouble.
If all else fails and you wanto get really pedantic, make a BLACK, PINK or YELLOW bashplate that covers as much of the visible parts of the tank as possible, because in actual fact the tank in a 4wd vehicle can get bashed from just about any angle

hhhmmpphhhhhh
Maybe you didn't quite understand the first time...
There is a law that prohibits you from painting an LPG storage vessel on a motor vehicle any other color than white, silver or matt silver/light grey. He asked and i answered, If you wish to go and give him false or misleading information knowingly then that's your choice.
The bash plate has a minimum and maximum specification. DOH! there goes another one of your good ideas
The regulations are from AS1425 which is the standard pertaining to the fitmentof LPG to motor vehicles so it applies Australia wide.
By all means paint the tank. But you can now do it in the knowledge that it's ILLEGAL.
I have illegal driving lights, body lift, body mods, brakes conversion and tyres so i'm not knocking anyone for doing something against a regulation, I'm just letting you know the reg's.
Cheers Dan.

i hear ya,
but in reality, lot of station wagon fords and holdens have bashplates that cover more than half of the tank and are black.
Same for a doughnut tank. actually more than half of a doughnut tank is covered in the spare wheel well of vehicles.
And then itts covered with a brown colored board, and then black carpet
so if you can cover a tank with carpet that is black, i am sure you can do just about anything to the tank, even if its a " loose and removable cover"
the above was the point i was trying to convey.
Cheers,

you haven't conveyed anything. the australian standard is the tank must be silver which would mainly be for safety reasons. if the car is on fire and a silver tank is spotted then firemen immediatly know about it and don't have to wonder if that black tank is simply a compressed air tank.
shiny silver tanks look pretty good anyway. mine has a silver bashplate on it.

mate how do you spot a tank in the boot or under the tray? seriously!
oh yeah there are really alot of cars and 4wd's out there with 80 litre air tanks.
it takes an shiny white car about 15 seconds to go black in a fire, so even if the tank was flouro yellow, it will be black in 10 seconds, DO you think the fire brigade is stupid enough to guess what color the tank was before all the paint burnt off it?
firebrigade look at the numberplate ( usually one of the last things to burn) for the LPG sticker to see if the vehicle is LPG. I can highly they open boots and check under cars to see if it has LPG or an AIR tank.

JEs, its not about logic, practicalities or practice - its about what is the law. A bash plate painted black is not the tank, so it doesn't matter what the bash plate is coloured. But, if your logic overrides the law, then thats fine for your 4WD.

Why ? it is filled with liquid to a maximum of 80% by volume. (OK so it may be a tiny bit less but hardly any signifigant amount)

ISnt that what you have the stickers on you number plates ??? So they know if your vehicle has a LP gas storage tank onboard..
Like places that store beyond X litres or Kg's of certain substances places have to display HazCem signs.

hot LPG displaces more area inside the tank, i THINK it also increases pressure, the AFL cuts of at supposedly 80-85% ( my 115 litre tanks i can always squeeze at least 100l in but the AFL kicks in at 90-92 on cold days or a cold tank)
when the weather is very hot, your AFL will kick in earliyer. If your exhaust runs to close to your tank this will also affect the AFL.
On one of our trucks, we had the pipe cut after the muffler for a little while, and if driven for an hour, you could not even get 1 litre into the tank as it was to hot.

Yep the LAW says thems da colors.......
The reality is matt black , semi gloss black, gloss black and several other colors 'is' happening.......... but who cares !
There are thousands of STUPID laws out there !!!
My main concern at the moment is that LPG tank in Stu's rig....
Is that a 'household cylinder' ?????
If so dont worry about any further leagalities at all

mate it's the tank that was in there, does look like a modified house tank, but it has all the stamps and stickers to prove it's a car tank?
