GQ 89 SWB 4.2 Litre petrol auto (newly built box)....Consistently get 20L/100Km round town....the very best on a trip was 14.5L/100Km......thats with 260,000 on the clock and a very soft right foot.

Make sure you check the breather is clear so it should suck any air through that rather than the seals.....also make sure it is connected properly......mine had a split hose....

I have removed my front sway bar totally and use the rear disconnect in the rough...(I have a 89 SWB)....little on-road difference removing the front bar...have driven on-road with the rear disconnected too and I had no dramas...just a little more body roll.

I have Cooper STs on the front of my GQ and they are absolutely diabolical in the wet on sealed roads...especially the hotmix bitumen......I also have gone from very firm front springs to very supple with OME shocks....its the tyres....great off road but as I said diabolical onroad in the wet.

My fuel gauge doesn't work at all...I keep filling up when I get around 250km on the trip meter...thats about 50 litres......

chimpboy is right anyway...dont trust the gauge....if you took 77litres on a eighth tank take thats about a standard tank of 95 litres......or close enough to it.....

Just on ya petrol consumption...an old worn TB42 will use around 20-25l/100km....more if towing or pushed hard...mine got up to 33l/100k towing ...(admittedly up a mountain though). Standard tank holds 95Litres (hardtop and wagon).

4.2 litre manual takes 13.9 litres
4.2 litre auto takes 13.6 litres

from the manual

Just make sure you bleed all air pockets out....like make sure heater is fully on......

I spoke to three places....funnily none of which recommended replacing the torque converter as the first option. Cause once the box is out there are a lot of other things to consider. Two places took it for a run and weren't too perturbed and the third said it was indicative of a box on its way out ...

Got 89 SWB auto...240K on the clock.... Driving along at about 110kph torque converter properly locked up ok...doing right on 2000rpm...and come to hill as the speed drops to 95 the auto box seems to shudder (like going over a cattle grid) for about half a second...torque converter still locked and ...

I just had the read diff rebuilt on the 89 SWB and replaced the bearings at the same time....the good news is if you have rear drum brakes the bearings are around $50-60 each...the bad news is if you have rear discs (like me) the bearing kits are around $250-300 a side. All up with new genuine Nissa...
