Just bough a Mav!

Post by hokey »

G'day guys,
just bought a SWB 88 maverick with a tb42 and i got a couple of questions.

1) The guy i bought it off put a air locker in the rear out of a swb patrol that he rolled A over T and the ratio is different to the front. since he put the locker in he never had it in 4wd so he never knew. i counted the ratio's just before and it looks like i have about a 4.1 in the rear and a 3.9 in the front. are they the two ratio's for these trucks?
2) can i swap the locker to the front so that i can get a LSD for the rear?
3) are there any majour mechanical differences between the mavs and patrols such as suspension and driveline?

Thats about it for now but i'll probably ad some more later.
Cheers, Calvin :D

gday and welcome to the wonderful world of nissans...

1> the ratios have to be the same if you want to run 4x4 in it. bad problems otherwise. depending on your tyre size of choice whether you choose 3.9, 4.11, 4.3, 4.6, 4.88 ratios. my tb42 has 4.11 as standard with 35's is still powerful enough, speedo is out though.

2> unsure

3> no, the mav is just a rebadged nissan sold under the ford name. patrols hold a higher resale value, that is all. you will get some variations in interior setups and the likes, but nothing structual or driveline related is different.

have fun with it

No you cant run the rear locker in the front as the axles have a different number of splines.
I ought to report you to the f#cking RSPCA neville.

So i would be right in assuming i have a gq 4.1 in the back and amaverick 3.9 ratio in the front? have to try and find some 4.1's before i can take it off road then :( also gotta try and find someone who will swap a rear air locker for a front one then i'll get an LSD for back diff :D

Why not go with 4.3's if your going to go with bigger tires - see the thread on NEW/USED PATROL PARTS - Hall Wreckers $800 a pr for them... your gearing will be much happier.

If you put it in 4wd with the current set up you will place enormous strain on the transfer case as you drive..no matter what surface...as the front and rear driveshafts will want to turn at different speeds because of the different ratios.....normally we get a bit of wind up in the transfer when we are in 4wd and do a lot of turning but your setup could well break the transfer case...it also would be a bit difficult to steer (corner) as well...the diffs MUST have the same ratios......my thoughts...

yeh i know this. not new to 4wd's just to patrols. windup is bad mmkay. eventually bogged 4.6's would be the go but i can't afford atm. is that 800 for just CW+P or is that two complete centres with 4.3 ratio's? what LSD's fit the front?
Thanks for your help guys,

So can someone please tell me what ratio's the gq's and mavericks came out with? a mate has a full front diff out of a diesel patrol that he doesn't need cause he has GU's in so he said i can have that centre just not sure if its the right one.
so anyone know models and ratios?
Thanks, Calvin

mavs are a mixed bunch, but the nissans had a pattern :P

auto: 3.9

manual 3L 3.9

manual 4.2tb 4.1

manual 4.2td 4.1 or 4.3

also could be optioned from factory with 4.6 and the ti model had a factory rear lock (god knows why you would buy a ti brand new to take offroad anyway)

i may be wrong but thats how i understand it, the mavs are a more sort of spare part build up, its like a lucky dip as to which ratio you get
Maverick. Unlocked on 35's MOTTO: Lock, Stomp & Hold on
