I think you are on the right track, sounds very much like the noise i had in mine a few years ago, intermittent noise would come and go, looked at the brakes all seemed fine, and of course when i took to a diff place i couldn't get it to make the noise. Sounds like you may have a leaking axle seal. Does the oil smell like gear oil? If so this is your problem. If not how long is it since the CV's have been looked at? Water may have been getting into the swivel hub and diluted the grease in the CV's or the swivel hub bearings themselves.

Can anyone tell me the factory measurement between chassis rails where the bullbar mounts? having touble with brand new ARB whinch bar bolting up. Chassis seems to be about 15mm wider than bar.
