This probably won't help now ... but out of interest I once owned a 2.4 turbo that developed a similar problem in that it had oil leaking from the turbo oil seals. Yes, with the standard steering setup it is required to maintain your steering geo. Without it, as your springs wrap it will change your steering geometry causing your steering to change direction. Hardly noticable on nice smooth roads, however, bad off road and very bad on fast and bumpy roads ...
