Gearbox Rebuild - rubbing noise

Post by beaver700 »

Gday,

Recently rebuilt my gearbox, it is from a 1987 sierra. That is all new bearings, and needlebearings. I made sure everything was back in as is should be. I put her back in, filled it with oil, and reversed off the pit... fine... Then went to put it in first, and there was a rubbing noise that sounded like metal rubbing on metal in the GB. Tried in other gears...fine. Decided that I should drop the box out again, split it open again, and check to see what the problem was. I found there were some ferrous-like shavings in the main box, as well as the extension case. I pulled of all the bearings, and there was no damage evident at all... I was stumped as to what the problem was... I am sorry about this long post, but I needed to do some travelling soon and wanted my suzuki back on the road.
I put the box back together and lifted it back in... and ....same problem in first.
Does anyone know what this problem is, or has anyone experienced something similar?

Anyhelp much appreciated,

Thanks :)

sure do.

it will be the roller bearing in the input shaft if you did not use a genuine suzuki bearing.

i have done this twice before i noticed what it was and have since found out through other suzuki suppliers that they have the same problem.

the af bearings are not the correct tolerances.

make sure it has not chewed your mainshaft out either when you strip it down.

Gday Mud4b,

Just wondering if the genuine suzuki bearings could be bought by themselves? I would imagine they would have to be bought in a kit... but I thought I would just check... Its just that I payed over $200 to get this bearing kit which is currently in the box... how did you solve your problem with the gearbox?

Thanks

yes you can but you will find it will have to come from japan as no one i know of ever keeps them in stock.

as bad as this sounds... i ordered some from japan for customers... but for my old box i just reused the old roller bearing. it was fine as there is little load on this bearing.

Gday mud4b,

I dont suppose you would have any idea as the the clearance between the baulk ring flange and the 1st gear cone...? I am not really sure of any of the precise details of the internals of the GB as I dont have a decent service manual... and I am not sure if you would either, but I thought I would just try...

Thanks again,

Martin

Sorry to revive an old thread....

My sierra seems to have a problem with the gearbox once again...

I noticed it when I was idling the car and got out of the car to open a gate, it sounded like a severe rattling noise coming from underneath... I climbed underneath and inspected where the noise was coming from. It sounded like it was coming from the front of the box, in the bellhousing. I was thinking it was the fork release bearing, until I noticed that occasionally when I was driving in 3rd gear, and then shifting down into 2nd, the whole car would shake, then stall??! And sometimes when I drive in 2nd it jumps out of gear?

I suppose I will have to take the box out again and inspect whats happening, but if anyone has experienced something similar to this, could you please let me know? :?:

Thanks heaps,
Martin
