Narrow to Wide Track Feroza

Post by MightyMouse »

Well its finally done - 1990 narrow track now a wide track +.

Overall width increase 7" - goes close to fitting under widetrack flares ( sort of ).
Front travel now +30% and absolutely symetrical - equal bump and droop travel - no torsion bar cheating - bad medicine.

Changes made ( front )

- uprated torsion bars ( to compensate for longer arms )
- heavier shocks
- longer Control arms
- offest ball joints
- new driveshafts ( longer and better material )
- new tie rod adjusters ( longer )
- longer brake lines
- widetrack flares
- no anti roll bar
- uprated shocks
- better brakes ( slotted & ventilated - instead of solids )

Rear Changes

- uprated leaves
- longer and uprated shocks ( + 50 mm )
- HiAce diff housing modified to sit on Feroza springs
- bump stop spacers
- Hilux large bearing centre with solid pinion spacer ( 5.285 )
- Air locker
- Custon axles ( Hilux 2 HiAce 2 Feroza ) - better material
- Hilux Brakes ( disks conversion down the track...... )
- Hilux handbrake adapted to Daihatsu cables and mechanism.
- Diff drive flange adapter - Hilux and roza bolt patterns
- shortened Roza tailshaft
- widetrack flares

Will eventually chuck the flange adapter for a full Hilux shaft but as a
transfer and transmission change is underway not worth doing at this
moment.

A bit under tyred at the moment (31") but can just squeze 34" under without hitting anything on full bump ( some sheetmetal removed from
guard rear corner ).

Result, Yeh Ha

Ride - Good for a Roza
Stability - far better on cross angles
Traction - doesn't lift front wheels so much and can't beat locked diff
Visual - well when parked next to a stockie is !@#$% obvious that things are VERY different but on its own doesn't look highly modified.

Negatives

Cost - locker, diff gears, Bilstiens etc all add up - - well let's not dicuss it - would have spent it on something anyway.
Work - doing it myself took heaps of time but would be megabucks to have done.

Overall

Do front and rear together, a wide rear and narrow front are downlight dangerous - the thing will try and kill you at every opportunity

Really need to have spare driveshafts and arms to modify else you can
kiss driving it goodbye for a fair period.

Well - it looks like a wide Roza, which was the whole idea...

That's a LOT of custom work. Feel free to post more pics of the underneath. ;)

What brake pads did you end up getting to go with the slotted discs? I think I asked in another thread but you didn't say? I've been trying to find a "performance" pad but have found zilch.

Appearances are deceptive - its actually wider than a Hilux. The pic was cropped and may be a bit distorted. Rotors are RDA, pads are custom ( cut from competiton pads ) but overall not a significant improvement but they don't fade.

Looks like its flex in the caliper that's essentially the limiting factor.

So much for all this extra front flex. Ya can't even get EITHER wheel on the ground in that pic :finger: :D :D

Onc again appearances are deceptive - bump at speed , without full droop( climbing a sand dune.... ) everything that got up the dune had air under the front at this point.

But you miss the point a little - the front is modified to match the rear which includes the airlocker and also allows me to fit a locker to replace the standard front diff as well ( 100 series cruiser... )

So its not the extra travel that was the major goal ( nics side benifit ) its the stability and lockers.

The fact that the travel is now symetric is also usefull - winding up the bars to create clearance is not a good solution.

But overall the Roza's have real travel limitations - that can't be fixed easily - have to admit that.

What mods were done to the front diff to be able to house a locker?
You used a HiAce diff in the rear, but did you change the front also?

Sorry for the bit of a dig... i found it when i searched for that rob-lo guy

The front would still be an open feroza diff but the rear has a locker.

Did you read what he said??
MightyMouse wrote:"ALSO allow me to fit a locker to replace the standard front diff AS WELL"
'Also' and 'as well' imply more than one locker to me.

And MM also wrote:

Note the (s) on the end of lockers.

I think it has more to do with that the extra width allows more room for a toyota front centre.

I can't talk this car up enough. Once ross figures out how to get the 18ft long vitara transfer case in to go with his auto, this car will be the business. about all it lacks now are gears and an auto to out the power down.

It seems to ride very nicely and the front is very plush, it is sooo much nicer than a car with cranked torsion bars.
