4.5 engine mods

Hi all
Well after throwing on some 33's,getting it gassed and putting a lift under my new rig,it's lost abit of heart..
already got the extractors and zorst done and im just wondering wat else can be done besides a turbo.
unichip??
finer filter??
get it professionally tuned??
iv done a search and found alot of stuff on the 4.8...just not the 4.5
iv heard of people pumping some power out of them but havnt found out wat they have done.

any idears..?

Dyno tune it i reakon and by someone that knows there shit backwards..

My Uncle has a XR6 turbo he got it tunned by a so called profesional..

It went hard used a fair bit of fuel but he was happy though..

About a week ago he was recommened to a guy who knows his shit and has a dyno etc..

So he went there and got it done and by fark it flys now bloody awersome and when we drove it home it uses 4L or a bit less fuel on the highway per 100km

So tunning is everything mate ..

My original GU ( Gueey wagon) was a 4.5 petrol
i also went through the chase for power game.
After i had the Pacemaker Extractors fitted and 2.5 Exhaust and a Uni-filter, i had a Duel map Uni-Chip fitted.
it made a great improvement to the overall power and drivability.
Power was uped, throttle response was more instant, and no annoying hesitations between 2000-3000 RPM
The final Dyno results were 83 KW@Rear on 35 inch claws and alot of heavey accessories i had fitted to my truck.
the figures were not huge on paper compaired to alot of the modded Turbo trucks, but the transformation of the truck on the road was very good.

"Flapper' from the overlaander forum gave us the web address of "airpowersystems" who supply the chip.
it's all looking sweet..! all there is now to do is buy the chip and be pointed in the direction of the nearest dyno..lol
might also buy a uni filter as well while im spending money..

on another note Grant with your lift did you put in 3 deg castor bushes in the front of your rig and if ya did, did it fix that light steer feel.

Yes my chip was a Duel Map with two programable maps, one for gas and one for petrol.
i had it fitted, tuned and dynoed for $1200

i have still not bothered with any castor correction, i find on 35x12.5 claws the steering to be still quite positive with only slight wander on really bad roads.

well went to the tire place this arves to get them to check out a slit in one of my new tires and..turns out i need a wheel alignment bad.. i was wondering why my tires were wearing bad and have crook steering..

just wondering if anyone's got any knowlage of the quality of workat TM Autosports at Tuggerah
or The Throttle Shop at West Gosford
as these are the closest mob to me that supply and fit the unichip plus dyno.

well spoke to the 2 closest unichippers
sounds like The Throttle Shop at gosford know what there on about and do quite afew forbies
price 1200 fitted tuned etc.just as gueey said
he said to expect around 15-20kw max with extractors,zorst and filter.
now when to take a day off work..

If you spend $1200 on a chip that will give you maybe 15kw top end your financially half way there to a turbo that will double your power and more importantly for towing double your TORQUE. You could keep boost very low (6-8psi) and have no troubles.

correct me if im wrong but for a low boost turbo set up do you only need a turbo,new manifold,dump pipe and a dyno tune..?
but then what would a turbo do to the fuel use..? i dont want it chewing any more than it already does.

than theres the insurence going up and the money wasted on extractors and exhaust thats only 6 months old..

Well a manifold can set u back quite a bit for a good one
Turbo well depends if u want a el cheapo one for a good quailty one etc..
Then if u want a external wastegate for the turbo..
Teflon oil lines for pick up and return pretty expensive..
Air cleaner set up of some sort pod filter or make something else up to fit a snorkle i don't know..
Gaskets for everything..
Dump pipe depends how big the outlet on turbo is maybe a 3" dump pipe..
Exhaust system do u want 3" mandrel bend or just a stock something or other..

Don't know if u need to buy a bigger fuel pump or injectors for 10psi as i'm running LPG myself..

Concering fuel usage "put ya foot down watch the fuel gauge move" "drive around like u want good fuel economy u should get better then now as u won't need to flog it as hard etc..

My insurance sort supprised me as i have to cheange insurance company now and have to pay straight up $1325

well the olds mans pretty clever(automotive engineer, mechanic, welder, fitter) and has mates all in the industry so im quessing that i could probably do it cheaper than alot of people.. but as everyone probly knows the cost can always blow out and normally does and i dont want to have to keep pouring money into the thing.

then there's trying to get dad to do it all for me...lol he lives by the old motto.(kiss) keep it simple silly..lol

i'd love a speed machine(ie XR6T) but at the moment id be happy having a machine that is comfortable and has some grunt when pushed. that's why im just thinking of the unichip.give me abit better milage and make it a bit more comfortable on the road.

and at the mom my insurence is only 550 odd,not 1300 odd

so for the moment i'l think i get the unichip than when the engine die's(touch wood) i'l giv it a nice power up with a transplant or just buy a 4.8 and turbo that lol

Good luck mate but a unichip might give u the little bit more power your after as a turbo works out to be pretty expensive .. my insurance is so high as i'm only just turned 19 on fed 2nd..

Just bear in mind that if u ever change you mind and turbo it the unichip wil b useless. From what ive been told they are very limited in tuning
for about $1200 you should be able to get a microtech and tune. Will be extra to get them to wire it in. No limitations then in tuning on that engine

i assumed if i ever turbo it the unichip would be an advantage
like the D-tronic's are for diesels.??

i would think the unichip would be better than none at all due to being able to change fuel maps for the increase incoming air , i doubt that the chip would be useless being that they are used inconjuction with turbos by some companies .

The Supercharger system was removed from the vehicle and a Safari Intercooled turbo System (Part number STCTB45E) was installed. The intercooled turbo systems was tuned to Safari specifications and boost pressure set to a low value of 3.5 psi at the inlet manifold.
The intercooled turbo system includes turbocharger, front mount intercooler, replacement exhaust manifold, Unichip ECU plus all ancillary hoses etc.
