hello people.

friend of mine is looking at a MU 2.8 td it has 180,000k's on it and i'm wondering what to look for upon inspection.

also what life expectancy do u get out of these motors and gearboxes?

The 2.8s are rock solid. Same motor as the Rodeo's but like all Turbo engines, oil changes are critical. check out this forum for Isuzu's esp MU's.

One major difference between some of the engines in the MU and the rodeo is that some of the 2.8 in the MU have a timeing belt while the rodeo camshaft is gear driven.
The timeing belt has a life of 100,000km.
Also some differences in pollution control attachments, the MU have some extra valves and hoses while the rodeo has the pads cast into the manifolds with nothing in them.
Well looked after and tuned you should see more than 400,000km out of a MU diesel. Bear in mind that a lot of japanese cars spent a lot of time idleing in traffic and maintenance wasn't an object as they are required (priced off the road) to replace their vechicles after 3 yrs.
