2h glow plugs start smokey

Post by cruiser60series »

My 2h has been put into a fj62 and ive just wired to glow plugs directly to a switch in the dash. temp sensor, timer and all that isn't there.

I know there is more than one type of glow plug used in the 2h over the years what i want to know is how to work out which ones you need. I also dont use the glow plug resistor, could this be the problem. It starts like a dog but once going runs like a dream.

I think there is a different voltage glow plug used in the earlier/later models.

It'll start up like a dog because the plugs dont work when it's running. There only there to assist on cold start ups. Diesel power baby

Most of the 2h's use a 6V glow plug and use the resistor to step down the voltage from 12V.

In the super glow system, which uses the current sensor, i think it glows the plugs at around 8V for a short time, then steps down to 4V. If you run 6V glow plugs straight off a switch, they will glow super bright, but wont last for too long. You need the glow relay though, cause a repco switch wont last long glowing the plugs cause they pull heaps of current.

If you dont want to use the glow system, buy some 12V plugs and set up the switch on the dash to operate a very heavy duty relay.
If you want a spare 60 for bits-

the original system sends approx 12v to the plugs for x amount of time depending on ambient / engine temp then drops to 7 ish v for x amount of time to assist on warm up first check your plugs with a multimeter. remove the bridging strap that connects them all together set your meter to ohms then check for continuity between each plug end and the head no continuity = dead plug which is likely if youve been giving them a shit load of 12v check that your getting voltage to them with the meter when all is good you might still get some smoke on start up because your not getting that voltage to them after startup

sorry should of clarified the switch goes to the original glow plug relay (on the inside wheel arch i think) so it could just be a matter of buying 12V plugs?

As i have another hj60 and could steal all the wiring off that but i really cant be fucked as Auto electrics drives me batty.

Do you have the resistor etc which hang off the inlet manifold aswell?

My glow plugs run at 12volt for about 4 seconds, then switch to something like 8 volt for a further 5-10 seconds depending on engine temp. They do this through the glow control unit.
