Rr 92 VOGUE SE - Auto Box Stuffed

Post by Dan K »

Hi All,

Any tips on the best replacemnet for my RR transmission. The mechanic has informed me that te rear planetary gear set has gone and there is metal floating around in the transimission box itself. So they are suggesting i replace with an aftermarket Planetary gearset that is stronger than original and they will rebiuld the existing unit with new parts like valves etc. All up I am staring at $3500 - $4000 for this work. The car has done 180,000 Km's and most of it unitll got it , was Toorak Tractor work. I have done the last 20,000 Kms with some reasonable 4wd work in the high country of vic ( nothing too extreme , mainly touring ) I want to keep the car and dont mind spending the dough to get another 100,00 km ( if the engine lasts that long) but I want to know what the more experienced people here would do in this situation. ie. is there a better path to take with spending this type of money ????

Tough decision, I know I had to do the same on the Paj recently at 170K. Not many options other than what's been suggested other than 2nd hand box, and there's no guarrantee that this will be any better. Had same issue with the Paj and in the end decided on a full rebuild. Got the price down to a little under 2k by removing and refitting the box myself. maybe you could do the same?

I assume that its the ZF gearbox? Do the 4HP22 and 4HP24 boxs run the same planetary gears?
Cheers

ZF themselves do reco ones in Australia, and I think the price is about the same.ie 3500-4000.
I would feel happier with a ZF one.
They are usually more relable than that, so maybe the PO never changed the ATF.
