Difference between 4 and 2 pinion diff carrier
Difference between 4 and 2 pinion diff carrier
ok...need to buy a 4 pinion carrier for the front diff of my 88.5 (apr 88) WT sierra for a new lockrite to drop in.
What are the visible differences between these different types of carriers as buying on ebay and other areas can make it hard if you don't know what you are looking for!
I know I can salvage a 4 pinion carrier off:
rear diffs off any WT sierra
possibly NT front diff (apparently have same side gear count as WT Front)
any others?
Will this do the job for my application? http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Suzuki-Sierra-di ... otohosting
cheers

Thats a rear or an early front, its carrier is almost solid and has a square shoulder.

A 2 pinion or front is bell shaped

Cant help with the ratio from that pic ? Sorry
But the center IS suitable for a lockright.
You will need the side gears from your existing front center to drive the locker if it was from a rear as the spline count and diameter will be wrong for the front.
If you change the side gears you will need to have the shim washers for the side gears changed too. Its cheap to have done.

if the ratio is different in this diff can i use the gears from a two pinion housing that is already in the front of my zook to replace those in the 4 pinion carrier in the picture above?
the guy told me the crown wheel had 40 or 41 teeth and the pinion wheel had 9 which comes to a ratio of 4.44 or 4.5. which doesn't make sense in terms of regular ratios?
Any help?
cheers

You can get lockrights with their own sidegears .. you dont have to use the existing suzuki units ..Bad JuJu wrote:Cant help with the ratio from that pic ? Sorry

To follow up..
I was emailed back from Richmond gears -
"...the front Samurai Lockright is no longer being produced with axle shaft couplers. Please use your existing sidegears.
For best performance swap the sidegears from left to right so you are driving the locker with the freshest face...."
Though I guess there could be NOS available

Get a front diff out of a n/t it will be 4 pin. Just rotate the carrier to check. 2 pin will have 1 pin going through and 4 pin has 1 long pin and 2 small ones at 90 degrees to it. The pins carry the spider gears which run onto the side gears. The 4 pin is stronger.
You could always get an arb that would solve all your probs :-)

Yeah I could couldn't i! But as I long ago decided this was to be a budget build $270 + approx $50 for 4 pin carrier + installation (100) = 420 compared to 1200 for locker and 300-400 bucks installation can't compete for a weekend wheeler when comparing the outcomes for both.
This month 4.9 trail tough gears, lockrite, modded cam and head to be added to the to do list. Have parts arriving this week... should be a capable little unit for the stuff I drive and the guys and girls I wheel with. Once I wear out the 30s I'll go to 32 inch mongrels or 32X9.5R15 simex Jungle trekker look nice.

Yeah simon,
can't tell you how much I have been busting to go out since I got back from OS. I got that worked up OS i bought the lockrite while in London and the Head and Camshaft while I was sitting in an Internet cafe in central paris....pretty bloody funny I was supposed to be on holiday having fun checkin out europe all I could think of was the zook sitting back home doing nothing!
Anyway new battery going in this week as well...old one was cactus no charge at all even on 60 amp charger. Have pulled the hubs off and they are currently sitting in some turps ready for a clean and new seals. My dad has sourced a 620CCA for round 120. Its a marine battery handy for vibrations and the like. Should fit with no mods. same size as the old exide.
will defintely be up for a trip soon. I'll keep you posted.
