Oil Catch Can bit of help..

Post by Mulisha »

hi guys

I have been putting my turbo on my TB42 and last night i noticed that now i have to spouts on my rockercover that are breathers for my crankcase i'm pretty sure..

Someone told me today that i need to get a oil catch can so i priced one from autobarn roughly looking at $80 or so that doesn't bother me ..

But i have a question in the pic below could i mount the oil catch can were my radiator bottle is as i want to buy a smaller one or use something smaller..

So can a catch can be mounted that far away from the rocker cover f i run the hoses around behind my dump pipe?

With a radiator bottle can i use anything like a 500ml coke bottle that has hose going in from the radaitor and one as overflow? can the bottle be mounted below the top part of my radiator or my radiator cap?

Thanks heaps for ya help!!

Rick..

I can't see a pic?

I've installed a catch can on my Rocky, mounted on the firewall. My tubes run under my intercooler piping etc and it doesn't affect its performance in any way. It just allows the oil droplets to collect in the can, and also some in the inlet pipe to the catch can. They are a good investment as I don't want all that oil hitting my hot turbine :?

To stay legal you have to go from the catch can back into your air inlet piping ... although the best method to keep oil out of your inlet is to use a breather on the other side of the catch can and blocking up the standard return into the intake.

I got mine from Supercheap and on the packet it says you can also use it as a radator overflow bottle. I've almost thought about buying another one for this purpose. I think they are $60 or there abouts. Better than the $180 they wanted at Repco..lol

I thought the overflow had to be about the same height as the cap? Something about bleeding air from the cooling system?

I undid the bolt at the bottom of my catch can the other day to drain it and the oil that came out was so black and gooey... lucky thats not going back into the motor ;) I like it when you have proof of something working :D

Sounds bloody awersome mate!

Hmm sounds interesting using the oil catch can as a radaitior over flow as well becuase they look pretty good and they can handle the heat well as there metal not plastic..

On my rocker cover i have 2 ports do they both go on the oil can?

Also i have added 2 pics woundering maybe if i put that bottle behind my head light and the catch can were my radaitor bottle is in the pic.. but running the hose behind the dump pipe.

Thanks for any help or suggestions !!

Cheers

Rick..

Thanks!

That's a 'FlashLube' dispenser for upper cylinder lube, not an overflow bottle.

I would perfer a much larger overflow bottle. Never know when you will need the extra capacity. I suppose if you are keeping it on the road a lot then not a big issue.

With the rocker cover ive seen little pod filters put on them.

Ill defiantly do a catch can setup to keep it all waterproof. I was thinking i could run all my breather lines into it then back into the snorkel . Diffs, gearbox ect...

How much oil could you expect to fill the can over what time period?

Cheapest option just to run a rubber pipe from the cover to higher up in engine bay with a filter on the end or would oil work its way up the tube?

You can put a filter on the rocker cover, although this is illegal and I think the filter would get quite a bit of oil in it. And on a 4x4.... you don't want water getting into your engine oil if you do mud runs, water crossings etc.

You can't remove any pipe on your engine and vent it to the atmosphere that wasn't that way standard, basically.

I think if the catch can fills up you may have issues that need sorting... I've had mine on for ~6 months and it only had a few mm of oil covering the bottom of the can.

I wouldn't run your breathers into it.. just put them straight into the snorkel or run them into your cab. :D

Hi guys

Thanks for ya help it really good..

I think i may have sorted it out all good ..

I run both my rocker cover pipe into a Y piece then run that single line into my catch can.. then run another pipe off the catch can into the (PCV) valve on my intake manifold?

Would that work ? If that would work could someone tell me if that pipe (in the pic above) that is connected to my rocker cover and going to my intake manifold is that the PCV valve that i need to connect up to from the catch can?

Why would my old set up have like what is shown above but a pipe going from the other rockercover port into my air cleaner ?

Also with the radaitor bottle idea do i just run the pipe going from my radaitor cap into the bottle.. then do i run another pipe off the bottle as a breather or something?

Also can i mount the radaitor bottle anywere in the engine bay as long it's lower the the rad cap?

Thanks everyone so much as i'm a pain in the a$$ for asking so many questions!!!!!

Cheers

I would have to see your car to know for sure.

The breather on the rocker covers is usually just for the heads

There is usually a separate crank case breather.

A PCV valve usually only vents when no boost is present and then diverts the vent else where when boost is present. Ie my old car vented it to the intake manifold when no boost was present due to the vacuum still being present. But when boost was present it sent it to the preturbo intake as the boost in the manifoild would not allow for flow and a vacumm existed pre turbo

The crank vent most of the blow by, very little usually comes out of the heads.

Probably just confused you and I do not know anything about your model but this is how most modern turbo cars work

The purpose of a catch can is to catch blow by and help to keep the charge air clean of oil. This helps prevent detonation and produce power.

Basically if you catch all the breathers to your catch can and give it somewhere to vent ie to the preturbo intake or atmoshphere (atmo is illegal) you should be sweet. Venting to the atmosphere may result in your car running rich as you are loosing air that the car was origanlly tuned for. Though stock car run horribly rich anyway

Keep in mind when setting up your catch can, that your car will produce very little blow by when no boost is present. Most stock cars running stock boost do not require a catch can. If your car is getting old maybe

Also a baffle between the intake on the can and the outlet ensure the oil is caught by the can, also some steel wool in the can never goes astray, especially if the can doesnt have a baffle

Thanks alot mate for that...

The only 2 breathers i can see are on my rockercover and in the manual said one is for the crankcase or something..

Before hand my car had a pipe go from the rockercover into PCV and then the other went into were my aircleaner was..

Jee i don't if what i'm going to do is going to work or not becuase i was just running a pipe from the catch can to the PCV.. and nothing at all going into my intake or anything..

I wounder what i can do as the catch can i got only has 2 ports .. one for the intake of oil i thought and the other was going to be connected to PCV ..

Cheers

Rick.

Jee i'm a little confused to what to do..

As my car will be turbo'd etc.. :? :? :? :?

leave the hose from the rocker cover to the pcv valve in the manifold connected just run the other hose that when from rocker cover to air cleaner in to the catch can.

If i do just leave the pipe connect to the PCV and then run the other pipe off rocker cover into the catch can were does it go from there so to speak? Do i seal the can off or do i need to let it breath?

Thanks

yeah let in breathe .does the catch can have a filter on it if not put one on top of it so it can suck clean air into the engine it will also stop oil being pushed out of the can

Well i'm going to run both rocker cover pipe into a Y piece then into my catch can run a pipe from the catch can to in front of my turbo to stay legal..

Were my car is venting at the moment into the manifold there is not a drop of oil in there.. so good condition engine really no blow by

Thanks guys

Yes the manifold inlet is usually the PCV valve vent, and is only open a light throttle and no boost, so that would make sense.

This was the case on my old car anyway which was a wrx.

Sounds like you figured it out for yourself.

It is smart to run it back to the intake preturbo as it works as a good vacuum and will be legalish, you can still be defected as it is not the stock pollution control system. It is pretty much illegal to touch this system.

I got out of a defect though by explaining to the officer that it catches the oil and it is disposed of properly rather than being burnt and causing pollution.

It may help, venting through a filter to the atmoshphere can carry a big fine, especially if it is found by the EPA.

Thanks alot mate yeah i'll put a PCV valve on the pipe before the turbo .. I just hope my car won't blow blue smoke or anything when i'm on full boost or anything wouldn't look to good with it puffing blue smoke everywere lol..
