Been looking at a new aerial cause on the highway mine bends quicker than a $2 hooker and the reception sucks (you were expecting another one weren't you )

I was thinking something like the:
GME AE 4706 Antenna
2.1M length
6db gain
Colinear Design Antenna
Heavy Duty Barrel Spring
Complete with 4.5 metre RG58 coax
PL259 plug

Rang Olbis today and they recommended the:
GME AE4018K1 Antenna
Extremely robust
Elevated feed and ground independant
Heavy-duty antenna includes a heavy-duty spring
4.5m of RG58 cable and PL259 connector
12 Month Warranty
Elevated feed design
Heavy Duty barrel spring

If anyone runs either of these could you give me some fedback on how well you find they work
Will the fibreglass ones break if on a spring and you hit a tree at slow speeds
I need distance for beach driving (6db or 9db) and wide range (4.5db) for mountain climbing.
The Olbis guys said that the whip on the AE4018K1 is 4.5db but the whole aerial acts like a 6db so you get the best of both worlds. Being not to savvy with this myself.....is that possible

i have the AE4705 the AE4706 is too high and hits all the trees etc,mine works great .

Think your right about the height
Do you use it in both conditions eg. long distance and confined hills
Does it bend enough on the spring not to damage the fibreglass

I just got the AE4018K1 and have only taken it on one trip but find it very good. The base spring is fairly strong but doubt it will break if it hit a tree. Never had a problem with signal in the Glasshouse mountains and was even picking up people other than those in my convoy....probably from the highway and that is reasonably hilly. Very sturdy and well built aerial though..I'd get another! Out of interest what are Olbis charging? I got mine for $122 from ARB but that is retail.

GME AE409L antenna has two whips one 6 db and one 9db good for long range highway runs and then some hilly stuff. Also has a good feature where you can lay antenna flat on the bonnet while wheelin still works sweet. all stainless steel so not as bling bling as the fibreglass ones. Really awesome reception. I think the prestige website has these. highly recommended. does bend a bit at the huge speeds that the zook gets up to though. makes it look like its going faster

it works everywhere i go,back of landcruiser park to the office easily. I have broken one aerial so far at a carpark and it has the same base as the AE4706 screws into and takes trees pretty well .mine is about 110cm long BTW

What are you using in the first place that can bend it on the highway that renders it useless?? Are you driving a stelth fighter? I'd be looking more into the wiring, or the radio itself.

I've run the AE4018K1 on 2 cars, and never had a problem - yes they bend with the wind at 100+k's, most ariels will, but never had a problem with reception..

Mate ran a glass one and it shattered on his 4th trip.. he isnt sure what happened (or he isnt saying ) glass wont bend, where the smaller metal ones will bend.

Glass ones are only good if your a real men drive utes wank that doesnt actually have radios in the car. (thats my theory after seeing 2 blokes at work with 2 on one car, and 3 of them on the car and no CB/UHF at all)

Prestige are the best for prices.

I run a few. The AE4105 is an outstanding allrounder and it is always on the truck. The AE4706 is very tall, too tall for town/coast work and only gets used when I head into remote plain areas. The AE4706 is also a good flag pole for the deserts. They will both bend on the spring and will not break, and actually that is the beauty of these aerials, they don't fatigue or break in the bush or when touring. Just watch the rubber caps on the tops, that they don't get torn off when driving under trees etc.
The AE409L is a great wire aerial and has really good reception, though its only really properly usable as a 6db setup when mobile, as the 9db deflects way too much for such a flat transmission pattern.

The aerial on it at the moment works fine when just climbing around but on the highway the end just about touches the cab. Could tbe the extreme speeds that the 2.8L diesel does

you have to watch the hieght on the fibre glass aerials. Yes they bend at the base spring but if they spring back after clearing an obstacle and hit another obstacle part way up they are more than likely to break. You can (or use to be able) to get kevlar ones, but in the end the same thing happened to it.

Given up on fibreglass and kevlar aerials and gone back to wire whip or skinny fibreglass aerials...

I've been using the AE4705 1100high 4.5Db gain on spring for years now and they're excellent. I've had one stolen though and my current one snapped the top off when it hit a tree at very high speed on a bush track on my last outing. Bugger still works fine, just fibreglasss is about 250mm shorter For this reason only i am considering a skinny, more flexible whip if i replace this one
