84 rangie smokin++

Post by fatnorm »

have a small persistant problem with my 84' rangie, seems to blow a reasonable amount of smoke when travelling down hill mainly, and overall burning a fair bit of oil, was told to do a compression test and all points were 120, i am assuming this is normal thus rings should be okay???, what else could it be???, was thinking valve seals, also noted both left and right front plugs were heavily coated in carbon when compared with the others. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, anyone else had the same problem.

This sounds like valve stem seals. Vacuum on over run sucks oil into thje cylinders through the stem seals. Replacing the seals may fix the problem, but the guides are probably stuffed too. A head over-haul can be done for around 450 bucks - so not too bad a cost. Also check the exhaust gas recirculation system for any blockages as this can cause a similar effect.
