Custom gas tank??
Custom gas tank??
Hey I've got a swb mk with 350chev. I want to run it on a gas research system(straight gas). My question is i want a custom tank made that will fit in the original spot. And have larger capacity eg. 120-130ltr+. And not loose ground clearance. Which is why i don't want a standard round one. Can a custom one be made LEGALLY??? And where can i get it made in brisbane???
Cheers Rees.

hi,
you will be hard pressed getting a tank made with more capasity to fit in teh same area and have more cleanace than the 100 odd litre gas tank that they make for the back of the mk.
your only other option would be scuba tanks and they will hang down alot less but also hold alot less gas.
your unfortunatly asking the impossible whan you want more capasity, less underhang.

Thanks for the reply.
Am i able to get a custom tank made legally??
Are Scuba tanks legal??
And does anyone know the length and diameter of a standard gas tank???
I'm going to be going to moreton island a bit and there is no gas over there hence the reason for large capacity!!!
Any one got better ideas on a tank set up???
Cheers Rees

you can get tanks made up by the tank manufactureres.
scuba tanks are entirely legal, they have them in different configurations in the back of rangies.
if you want some advice for your truck, dont bother with straight gas. dont bother with gas research.
get yourself a big arsed holley, a 850 spreadbore and jet it right down.
then get yourself a 425 impco converter and an l series mixer, or 2 425's and 2 smaller mixers if your engine is worked.
then get your dizzy timing graphed to GAS, ramp your timing up an extra 15 degree's, if you can shave your heads a fair bit and furthur still get a gas cam.
when you set it up this way it will run very sweet on GAS, and reasonable on petrol using high octane petrol.
beleive me you have plenty power to spare, and i bet you wont notice the difference if you went straight gas and gas research.

X2
I run a 72lit tank where the std fueltank was once fitted
a 40 lit tank beside the rear drive shaft ( 5spd box fitted to a SWB )
& a home built 38lit petrol tank that fits between the rear LPG tank ahd the rear cross member
Engine is a 350Chev and I run the exact combination that Jes described.

hey thanks for that jesse!!!
Is there just a kit i can get installed or is what you are describing a non-standard setup.
And can i do any of it myself or does someone have to do it that is trained to?
I've got a 650 square bore on at the moment. whats the idea behind the big holley?? I think i heard something bout gas taking up more space!!! If so is the big holley for more airflow???
What sort compression ratio am i looking for to run it on gas???
What do you mean by graphing the dizzy to suit gas??? Is that putting different weights in it??? Its a Twin Point Mallory???
Thanks HEAPS Rees

hi mate, all the bits i described to you can be done by anyone that is LPG knowledgeable. If you have no LPG at all, then you need to get a installer to do it for you, or someone that knows their stuff, and someone to compliance it.mk swb wrote:hey thanks for that jesse!!!

the large holley is for more airflow ( your correct). You need to make sure its a spreadbore and teh mechanical secondaries would work better than vacume.
10.5:1-11.5:1 with this comp, you can get away with high octane unleaded, ( only just with 11.5:1 )
they change the advance curve in the distributor, they do change the weights. i think there is a key to change the advance curve in the mallory?
if you do this, make sure you get a good cam grinder to spin you up a cam specific to your engine. the camshaft is the single most important part of a small block chev to extract the maximum amount of power from any given hardware configuration.
no dramas man
happy to help

you need an impco 425 on yoru engine with a impco L series converter.
the setup in my MQ is similar to the one on ebay. 300a mixer but l series converter. Its ok for a bog stock 350 that produces low power but heaps or torque, so i would not sell that to you with your requirements

Hello Rees, You are researching the same thing I am at the moment. I was under a mates GQ LWB the other day with my MQ SWB beside it and was measuring up both. He has a 450 x 900 tank (approx. 100 L usable) behind his back wheels. Mine has a 2" body lift, about a 2" suspension lift and currently on 31 x 15 tires and his tank would fit in mine with more ground clearance than his. With this setup you will still have around 400 mm clearance under the tank. As you can see from the above I am also looking for a tank about 450 x 900 and they are a standard size. Also my current Petrol tank, which I believe to be an after market is under the passenger side and measures 300 x 300 x 800 so you could fit a 300 x 800 tank there (approx. 40 L usable). All of the above would give you quite a good range on 140 L of gas.
Hope this helps
