what should i do ??? i need some help with engine choice...
hello all i put up a thread a few weeks ago saying my 2H had died...
well i was right on the money with that
the engine is worn so bad that a rebuild is out of the question ( according to the guy who pulled it apart)
and we sat down to work out the cost and to rebuild the engine injector pump and injector overhaul new clutch etc... it added up to nearly as much as a 12ht which everybody seems to like...
i need some help with making up my mind...
should i go the:
12ht
rebuild 2H
injected commonwhore v8
350 chev
get a different car
what do you guys think...???
and what would i be looking at for rough prices???
cheers

whats the 60's body like first off and condition of the rig ?
how long can it be off the road for ?
whats the rigs general purpose ie daily driver , bush beast or tourer
id probably go with the 12ht mainly for reliability purpose
a v8 does sound good but you do have to consider fuel consumption ,reliability , and v8 n cruiser likes to break drive line components [ yes u can break driveline parts with a stock motor too ]
cooling issues
if its a v8 u need it to be injected or on gas for steep hill climbing / off road
and also how mechanically minded are you if your attemting it yourself
and budget ?

thanks for the offer carts but the car is off the road now and i wanna do it once and i would like the extra power of the v8... plus i wanna go 35" tyres someday and i think the v8 would be more suited to that...
and i plan on having the car for a very long time... long enough to warrant maybe another rebuild to a 12ht or the v8... with the v8 this cost will be greatly reduced when it comes time to do it...
cheers

i say this from experiance, v8 cruisers are mongrels, u will be blowing ur rear hub's on a regular basis if u like to drive hard on road and it's hard to work in the engine bay cos they take up all the room e.g (i have to pull my extractors off to get to my starter motor). oh and it chews masive amounts of fuel, but hey it's alot of fun to drive while it's going.
the 12ht is the easyest option or even a 1hz. but if it were me i'd go a ford 250 xflo and turbo it u will get better economy and power than a 350 chev.

i cant justify that much money for a second hand engine... and i cant afford to buy a complete donor...
plus i am not really bothered by fuel economy coz i ride a pushie to work and the car really only sees offroad and a small amount of onroad ( i guess that could change though...)
i have already had a turbo 250 crossflow ( in an xf falcon) and i would like another but that would still cost heaps and i would want it on gas if i did that...
so with the rear hubs can you explain a little more about what happens???
or why it happens???
is there a solution for this problem???
cheers

say i did go for the 12ht...
how many K's does one of those last before it needs a rebuild ( provided it is looked after) ???
and what would i need to change to fit it to my 60 ???
will it match the 2H box' and everything else or do i have to buy other things for it???
cheers any help will be appreciated...
( i dont like the idea of breaking things heaps easily...hubs etc )

12HT is the same motor as a 2H with a few exceptions. (uses virtually identical block). It has direct injection, Piston skirt cooliong, and a turbo.dybes wrote:say i did go for the 12ht...

It will bolt directly to your h55F gearbox, i believe the 12HT uses a bigger clutch and flywheel than the 2H, but yoiu should get this with the engine (or fit a new clutch anyway?)
Other than that, it should bolt directly into your engine bay.
You might(will?) need to change the preheat timer, as the 12HT uses a glow screen on the inlet manifold rather than 6 individual glow plugs.
You should be able to get a wreck for a max of 5K, thats what they are asking for a good 12HT seperate, so thats definantly the route i would be going.
A 12HT will go somewhere between 400 and 500 thousand. Well looked after it will go to the 500.
thats the going price. I doubt you will find one cheaper. Wreckers are asking as much as 7K for one.dybes wrote:with out going into too much detail i have found a potential 12ht for roughly $5K but it has 263K's on it... (australian one not jap imported)
regularly maintained...
is this too much $$$ ???
are the K's too high for the price???
cheers
mate i no they blow up parts but they r so easy to work on!known 2 wrote:i say this from experiance, v8 cruisers are mongrels, u will be blowing ur rear hub's on a regular basis if u like to drive hard on road and it's hard to work in the engine bay cos they take up all the room e.g (i have to pull my extractors off to get to my starter motor). oh and it chews masive amounts of fuel, but hey it's alot of fun to drive while it's going.

yeh mine is a 308 so it's very wide. but yeh the 350 chev is so narow so it would be easyer to acces parts in the engine bay.
as for blowing stuff up drive it gently around town and u shouldn't have drama's but get a locker or lsd to share the load between the hubs cos if one gets all the power then grips somethings u will shear ur axel studs off, i've done in 3 times, but i am running 35i tyres.
U can prevent it by converting to 100 series 10mm bolts.
