Post by CWBYUP »

Looking at soften up the springs in the zook and just wondering how many leaves people have pulled out the packs front and rear without having axel tramp ?

There 2" king springs if that helps.

Nick,

This is impossible to answer and depends on so many factors. We have run cars with three leaves only (OME) and they lasted about 3 years until they were too flogged out from axlewrap, but this was on a 34" tyred car with 120:1 and a locker.

How bad axelwrap will be will depend on gearing, tyre size, power, clutch type, location and condition of shocks, driving style, and surface you are driving on.

Generally, 4 OME leaves (A HD rear with the overloads pulled) seems to be acceptable, but this will still give a fair bit of lift, hence the reason some of us have run three leaves - to get the car to sit into its travel better.

The only way to tell is to try it and see - it should only take a couple of hours to pull a pack apart and play with the number of leaves.

Mostly I dont have a passenger and most weight is on the drivers side, I found I had to remove 1 less leave on the drivers side rear than the passengers side. When you remove leaves, take the shortest out first as the longer leaves will be more fully supported and the shortest leaves flex least.

Steve it correct, it wont take long to sus out.

And seeing as you have everything apart, move your diff 20 mm forwards by redrilling the perch and spring plate 20 mm rearwards. It makes a fair bit of difference in the feel and balance of the car. much more than 20mm and the steering linkages will touch and bind under certain conditions.

And you gain some clearance in the back of the front wheelarches.
