finaly stopped thinking about welding front diff, while I had to werk in the vicinity of front diff, I threw in Joey's old 1.0L welded diff. (leaky axle seal and recheck of AT 2003 track-side repairs).. I will probably drive with one hub out, and only lock both hubs in the same situations as you would switch on front ARB type locker. This will give me real experiences, not just logical idea thinking type experiences. Did too much thinking with the rear weld, now I wish I'd done it years ago. I've been watching peoples with ARB, Lock-rites, Detroits and welded fronts, and they all want power steering, so by buying a proper locker, will still need p/s anyway. So this will show me fors and againsts for various front lox, and maybe I get proper locker with more enthusiasm later. May not need p/s if I only lock both hubs in extreme places? time will tell, christover

locking one hub will still be a biatch to steer I know that doesn't sound right but when I had a ciG in the old Zook I tried that and on some turns it was as heavy as.Take it easy with the CV"s one day I broke 1ltr cv reversing out of the workshop broke the other one putting it on the trailer and ended up driving the day in 2wd (calabash rd)

wow, off road traction is amazing. I know I want a front locker,
now. but, yes, steering is heavy, and fine steering control in
greasy mud aint possible, and high speed on dirt is a bit
unpedictable. .... will have to relearn driving styles.... with one
hub unlocked, it is quite drivable, only a little pull to right
under acceleration, and to left under deceleration. maybe need a
switchable free wheel hub, so getting out to lock it wont get
annoying . for now it will do, just lock freewheel hub when going
gets extreme, 3 wheel drive be ok all other places. ultimate aim is
power steer anyway, will keep watching the butterbox, see if
lockrite worth saving for, but any diff lock on front will want p/s (Igot useless shoulders).
most of present difficulties is that the tyres on the front aint
same rolling diameter, measured quite surprisingly different, 29,
29.8".....

I know of a few who have broken cv's, with an even spread of non locker, proper locker, and cig lockers. 1.0 litres and 1.3's and 2litre hybrids....seems to be a weak point.
(air lox be nice, but lockrite is my only choice unless I get 1.3 diffs)
I got a 1.3 cv on my 1'o litre axle, they fit, in case any one needs to know.
I broke a cv with an open front end, on last Adventure Tour. A spinning wheel suddenly got traction. Tho the CV appeared to be an original for the zook @ 20 years old.
I put off welding front for many reasons, but it became obvious I wasnt getting a proper locker, so we will try it, and can always go back to open(with brake modulation) if have to. christover
