Knocking noise in right front of GQ.. Help Please????

Post by lowexf »

Hi, when I turn left at about 70 to 100 kmh I get a fairly severe knocking noise coming from the right front of the vehicle, ( a 94 GQ wagon ) you can feel it through the steering and through the floor. I thought it was like a cv joint noise, but it shouldn't have any effect in 2wd. the funny part is, when I accelerate through the corner the noise stops, so it is only doing it under deceleration, and it has to be a fairly hard left turn. I have put it on my hoist and checked all steering components etc, and it isn't hitting the mudflap or guard flare. It has me stuffed. Can anybody help with suggestions or past experiences?

A body mount wouldn't cause a repaetitive knocking through the car though would it? It really feels and sounds like a crook cv joint in a front wheel drive car.

what have you looked at so far?

Does it happen more when going off gutters, bumps or when wet??

They suffer from
Cracked floor pans where firewall meets floor
Panhard rod bush, many other bushes in front end.
wheel bearing

CV would clunk as stated.

http://carl.outerlimits4x4.com/search.php would help a lot, it has been asked with many good threads with info

It happens in any driving conditions, any road, but only at a speed above the 70kmh area and upwards, I haven't checked the panhard rod bushes, mainly because I can't see how they would make a repetitive knocking sound, but I will check them, the wheel bearings were replaced about 12 months ago, and a cracked floor pan wouldn't give the knocking sound either, it would just clunk or creak or groan once wouldn't it? And would a cv clunk when the hub is disengaged?, I believe that it wouldn't even be turning. The thing that throws me is why it stops doing it when I accelerate.

I recon I got the same sort of noise but only when at speed on a rough bit of road , sounds like the dash is loose or somthig . Might have to check for cracks or mounts as its got a body lift. I know where to start looking now as it gets anoying.

it will be either a loose body mount or a crack in the floorpan...more than likely a body mount..it will do it at certain corners etc as the body will be twisting at a particular way which will make the body knock...the mount under my drivers foot does it as does a mates GQ...

Clunks in front

Post by BushPig »

I know it sounds a little crazy, but have you checked the driveshaft universal joints?? Had a truck a while ago with that problem.

However, that said, I have a problem in my GQ where I get strange clunks in the front which feel to be under my Right foot, but only when it is wet. Have had it checked many times and no bush issues, but in the dry no noise, only in the wet.

Have also checked body mounts. Now just don't worry about it!!

I know this sounds a bit crazy ....and is probably a long shot....but check your bonnet hinges. The pin wears on the main pivot....and the fix is to bash it between two hammers....as it looks like a large rivet....but dont overdo it!!!!. I had a problem noise that sounded like the front body bolts were loose....and it turned out to be that.

Cheers Keith

with the bonnet the hinges do hit on the sides of there mounts , if you look close you can see a couple of nice shiney spots on the brackets where they hit , i just placed some zip ties around the hinges to soften the hitting of the metal to metal contact
