Ute cab on a SWB - In Vic

I am thinking of doing this.
I know its a straight bolt on and all the mounts line up. Just wondering if it needs to be engineered. As I am hoping it doesent and I just need to get a REVS check (as the SWB will be a write off). And try and find a good nick cab for it. ANd a RWC.

Anyone done it in VIC? Just wondering how it went with Rego?

I met a bloke at Toolangi in a GQ shorty chassis with dark grey GU cab and Navara tub, what a ripper little bus that was.
He was driving with a fella in that Kermit green GQ shorty with GQHOON plate from memory?

Yep know both of those cars.
GQhoon is a turbo petrol MWB GQ.
The other is a GU ute cab with narvra modded tub on a GQ swb chassi.

They would both have needed an engineers cert as there both very differnt from std. Whereas I am just looking at putting a STD GQ ute cab (bubble cab) onto a STD SWB gq chassi. Well thats the plan to start with.
Then work on it from there.
But I want to atleast get it together and rego'd then start the modding phase. As then I can save and mod bits when the cash turns up.

i dont like to say it but ring Vic Roads, but it cant to hard to pass it (maybe a litle expensive) :?

Yer well, between you and nudge I am going to have to do something cos your both shitting me.

As for the ute/swb thing. Dont think it will happen with a UTE cab. As they dont exist in Victoria.

well in queensland i had to get a blue plate to say it is no longer a 5 seater and is now just a 2 seater pretty straight forward the department of transport didn't need to see it

I'm sorry to say but I don't think it is allowed in victoria. :cry:

I believe what you are trying to do is called "re-shelling". It is stated in the VicRoads doc I have attached. I looks like you MAY be able to do it with 2 legitimate vehicles but if one have been written off, then you're out of luck.

If I have misread it, or someone can tell otherwise, I will stand corrected.

a mate has a ute cab on his shorty after letting it have a lil lie down.

had to get it road worthy, change the max seating number, and inform vicroads with all relevant paper work... not even an inspection!

12-18 months ago now.

dont all the patrol have the numbers on the chassis??

if so how is it called a re shell then?? i am only speaking from mq experience tho.

just do it. the police prob arent smart enough to tell the chassis is shorter.

Bugger by reading that it sounds like its a no no. Which is wierd then why do wreckers still sell shells. As I price a heap today ute, SWB and LWB. Will try and find someone in vicroads to talk to on monday.

another option you might look at is keep all the old plates that were on your old body then rivet them on to your ute body and say you did a chop then all it is then is changing the no of seats

Yer what I am looking at is a repairable writeoff. Not a Stat write-off.
Still gotta phone VicRoads tomorrow. I just dont want to spend money on it then get to rego and not be allowed. As now. They look at what was broke on it. And you have to accout for everything you do to make it right.

well as long as it is a repairable write off like you say, there shouldnt be too many dramas as long as your repair all damage and do the body swap, still check with vic roads,

but it will be good to see another budget buildup over time,
good luck with it

If this plan does happen it will be slow. As the 2 smartarses above have pointed out (AdrianGQ and Juzza).
As most of it will be done at home with not much knowledge. But I am 100% sure I can perform a body swap with no problems. Then take it to some one with years of experiance to go over and finish it. I will just get 90% of it in the right place for them.
