been watching this one with intrest. sooooo went out today and bit the bullet.
Orignal shocks or at least the ones that wer in it
Full open 470mm
full closed 290mm
Gabriel 81147
Full open 515mm
full closed 315mm
so these should do but it will depend on your lift and flex.
I have 110mm between my bumpstop and the chassis. Shock is currently sitting at 430mm extn. So if it closes 110mm then it will be at 320mm which leaves 5mm to spare before bottoming out. Of course all this is in a perfect world.
Will see how it works.

Give me 1.5 weeks and I to will have the Hiace shocks on my 2 inch lift. Mind you I do also have a 2 inch (1 inch taller) shackles

Stumped runs VS shocks in the front, and hi-ace rear. I do have some flex shots of his rig, but they are lost in the machine ATM. Hopefully he gets of his arse and responds here.

Just out of curiosity - i bought two suspension sets (branded Formula Suspension) through Bursons, supposed to be a 2" lift over std. The spings have i think four leafs, with an extra load leaf on the rears. We fitted one set to a '86 JX N/T, and they're quite tall, and they factory shocks were at LEAST 2" too short to even reach the mounting pins.
I've just fitted the second set to my '91 W/T, and have the same problem - the factory shocks are way too short to reach the mounts. I actually had my brother hang off the corner of the car, and we compressed it enough to slip them on. Needless to say, it handled like a skateboard, so we left them out.
So did i get some really lifted springs, or is this a common thing?

I thought the hole idear of using the longer shocks was to get more travel. extending the bump stops defeats this. You have to move a mounting point on one end of the shock.
The only benefit of using longer shocks/extended bump stops is you do get more ground clearance. which is fine if that's your only goal.
coxy' When I fitted my raised springs I had the same problem as you. That's why you should fit matched springs and shocks. The springs will settle down with time. If you got heavy duty, than your expected to be carrying extra weight in the zook. Mine worked better after I fitted the winch which the springs where designed for.

Built swb sierra, building a lwb sierra ute and have a dmax for family camping

From memory, it was about $650-$700 for the springs, and $160 for a nolathane bush kit. Haven't had a real chance to get out and test it, as we haven't had the correct shocks to drive it anywhere. I actually removed the extra-load spring off the rear leaves - as it was HUGE, and obviously wont help with ride/travel. I'll see if i can post a pic up.
Zute: The idea of using longer shocks is to accommodate for extra suspension travel (being useable either on full suspension compression or full suspension extension), and work as a normal shock absorber would.
For example: If i was to refit the stock shockers back into my car (with lifted susp.), and lower the top shock mount to suit the lift (maybe 2-3 inches lower), all that this would acheive would be to allow (maybe) the spring to droop to its full extension. However, when i go to compress the suspension, you will find that the process will actually be stopped because the shocker will become fully compressed (not a good thing), and thus stop that side of the diff from compressing up any further. So in any circumstance, the factory shock wouldn't help at all. Bump stops are actually used to stop the suspension from compressing up too far and damaging the shockers (from bottoming them out), and also to stop big tyres chewing into bodywork.
In the perfect world, a shock absorber would be 10cm fully compressed, and then maybe 100cm fully extended - but that is not physically possible (well, for now it isnt).

Yeah, either way its a cheap set of springs, whether you just throw them in or if you pull them to bits. eBay have kits for $600 plus postage, so its comparable. I also forgot to mention that the shocks that came with the kit were even shorter than the standard ones!!!

I put the vs rears in the front of mine and early model hilux in the rears, i ramped it without shockers to measure distance for droop and compression. And neeeded to put a 1 inch bumpstop extension on, front and rear. Although i havent done the rear, i will be doing it very soon whilst the car is up on the jack stands by welding some inch square tube to the bumpstop plate.
And when i put those front shocks on i put extended brake lines on.
these shocks you should be able to get for under $30 each, if not your getting ripped off.

CHOPS1: A perfect example of extended bumpstop use for ZUTE.
I ended up sending my old man up to shepparton to get those shocks for me (Gabriel 81318 for rear & 81340 for the front), and he got them for $36ea i think. I'll be heading out to the olds' property today to test the shocks and springs for flex/ride.

Another thing to mention about the bumpstops is that when the side that is compressed hits the bumstop it can help the other side of the axle to push or droop down to make contact in a hole or where it is leaving the ground. it only helps a little from what i can see, it may help better on a coil sprung car?

coxy, you don't understand. reread what I wrote. To get more travel you HAVE to relocate at lest one shock mount per shock. Other wise what you gain in droop(down travel/extension), you loose in compression(bump/up travel). You add the bump stop extension to stop your shock from destroying it's self under full compression.
So if you raise the top shock mounting point, you get all the extra travel, with out having to add to the bump stop.
Yes I know this is a bigger job, but that's the only way to do it.
And I know how fulcrums work.
One other thing. Aftermarket shocks can give you more travel than standard shocks, because manufactures may only fit shocks that they deem necessary. Very true Zuke. Your idea is basically to acheive the same goal as what i wrote - just a different way to go about it i think., except (like you said), for the increase in up travel, you would directly lose in down travel. But i'm still not 100% convinced, as the stock shocks (as an eg.) have a completely different compresion and extension length than these aftermarket ones we've been talking about. And to be honest, i haven't seen a great deal of people relocating shock mounts (aside from aftermarket mount kits) to gain a little extra up travel.

Hey Taff,does the shocks bolt straight in or is there some mods that need to be done? i just want to have everything prepared so i can do it all at once and not have to f**k round too much when i pull it apart.
So i need above mentioned shocks and springs,bushes all round and what else? do i need new U bolts?
