90 - 96 4 runner shell on 85 Chassis

Post by dawg runner »

Gday,

Have just purchased an 85 4 runner about a month ago with a little rust in it. Typical places windscreen, a little under the fibreglass roof, gutters, rear lights & guards/flares.

I am getting all geared up to take it off the road for a little while in which time I will strip it and repair any rust i can find on it.

I thought instead of wasting my time repairing the rust on it can i fit a later model shell to it. Now i know it can be done depending on the amount of money available but just wanted to know if anyone has taken on this conversion and if so how involved is it.

I have done three engine swaps in my life rb20 into R31 skyline, Mitsubishi cordia (shitbox) and a V6 4 runner engine swap. I have not done a body swap before but am confident i could get them swapped over but not sure about mounting. Just looking for any info that could help me in my decision. I know i could fit a later model like a LN61 shell but am going to run into the same rust problems sooner than if i put the newer shape shell on it.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks guys.

Dave

Reece off the Surf Forum did this.....Wheelbase was only 5mm difference, and some of the body mount also lined up. By the sounds of it, it's a pretty straight forward swap.

Maybe search the Surf Forum for more info.
