Ok guys i have been offered a 94 rangie to add to my collection for what i think is a great price......
I have a few questions i need answered...
The airbag compressor has shit itself but i already have some 2" OME coils and shocks.....is it a straight swap,if not is there anything i need?
The ECU is playing up so i would replace it any recommendations?
Will the axles be 10 or 24 spline.....i have 10spline diff complete with air locker so if there still 10 spline i will swap it over...
How bad are the BW transfer cases keeping in mind the vechile will be only used offroad ocassionly and nothing to hard thats what my 110 is for
I already have an LT230 sitting there to put in if they are that bad..
Think thats it for now any help appreciated

Having owned an 81, 77, now a 92 Range Rover, I am biassed in liking the BW.
I know Aquarangie disagrees but, I can climb a rock shelf just as far as any Disco in our club.
A BW is like a LT230 that is locked, but with a little bit of slip to allow cornering, as long as it has fluid in the viscous.
They are also more likely to fail locked than free. You can tell by the windup . ( so its unlikely that you will be stuck by one)
In every on road/dirt road ,track, mud, sand condition they are as good as an LT230 without the backlash, clunks, whines etc etc.
The coupling seems to last about 200K ( and you don't know how they were treated ), as does the chain.I will rebuild mine if/when it dies.

One question, how do you know the ECU is playing up ? They are pretty basic and don't really work that well to start with. I burned one out by accident.

I think you will know!!Either the engine will not start, or run rich or stall etc.One question, how do you know the ECU is playing up ? They are pretty basic and don't really work that well to start with. I burned one out by accident.
I have never had a problem, and I fitted an old SD1 "Federal Injection" to a 77 also.So ido not agree that They didn't really work that well to start with.
The major problems are with sensors, and these can usually be found by doing a diagnostic, as detailed in the manual. Most of the sensors are pretty cheap so can be replaced, except the MAF and it usually is easy to diagnose.
The 14CUX is just a Lucas built Bosch LE Jetronic, which was the premier injection in its day. It is not basic, but in Australia, Rover chose to run them without O2 sensors etc, as there was no legislative requirement.
Australia got a tune common to Kazakstan!!!
I think the major performance problems are because the engines are "rest of world" and designed to run on very low octane, so the advance settings etc are very conservative.
My engine picked up nearly 30% power in some rev ranges with a Unichip altering the inputs and adding an electronic advance curve, and most of this was from timing changes.
So the 14 CUX is not too bad, and can handle quite an increase in power.

I still havent personally seen the truck but my dad had a look at it for me..
He said it ran rough and the guy told him the ECU was stuffed....Without looking at it myself i cant be sure exactly what it might be...
Its also duel fuel so that could possibly have something to do with it!
For the price its a steal as the guy just wants it gone from his driveway.

Viscous Coupling. Phil likes his BUT I FUCKING HATE THE BASTARDS With a rear Diff lock they're worse as the drive in my experience always defers to the unlocked end (front in my case). I had a club member tell me this when I was having problems climbing over a rock step one day. LT230's are more common, cheaper to fix (if they need them) and have the CDL. I personally like having something that I engage myself than have it done for me (bar changing gears because I'm a lazy fucker ). My VC transfer almost seized at 270K and that's the only time the fucking thing worked
The ECU's are pretty much trouble free as long as no one has buggerd around with them. My attitude to EFI is don't play with them. Sometimes rough running is a vaccume leak or one of the sensors had decided to play up (I remember my cold start semsor on my 3.9 93 Rangie played up and ran like crap, put a new one in and it was all good again. It was a wild guess and giving info over the phone to the local LR mechanic was about as much diagnostic info I had ).
Air suspension, dead set PIA so fuck it off and you'll be a much happier RR owner for it. Not worth a pinch and it's not much good to you when it craps itself in the middle of traffic or in the scrub. It's great when it works but for me it's just too iffy and unpredictable to be trusted. If you have the patience and time it's worth keeping I suppose.
Like TuffRR said, it would be a 24 spline but there was a changeover when they still were running the 10 spline with identical axle flanges to the 24 spline jobs. My 93 Rangie had 10 splines in them and was fooled by the axle flanges thinking it was a 24 spline but wasn't the case.
Anyway, best of luck with it If you go ahead with it

I dont agee with auqarangie... If u tend use yr rangie on road with a little off road use touring etc... replace the bags with the cheaper more reliable after market ones as they die..... get and emergency inflation device for yr air suspension system (little valve thingy) or if you really want to carry a 12v air compressor in the boot if you can for the time it goes down and you are far away from a servo...... and in saying that being a v8 you will always be near a servo and you will be fine..... being a 94 it will have the BMW dash and saftey airbags so not the best idea to do any serious off roading in it! the VC will die no argument from me there so get a late model disco LT230 fitted and that problem is solved! There is no better felling then cursing down the hwy way and the air suspension lowers it self and it handles better then yr run of the mill holden or ford ( of this year )
IMO stick with the Air Suspension upgrade too Bilstein shocks and yr set!

May do the same with the transfer case...i have a good lt230 just sitting there too..

if you wanted to keep the air suspension, I'd go the option of whacking an endless air compressor in, and plumbing it up to the existing tank. use a 150 psi pressure switch, and you won't be exceeding factory pressure, and you can hook up an air line to run air tools/tyre gauges etc.... And you'll never be waiting for 10 mins for the sluggish little electric compressor to get enough pressure up to inflate the bags - quick stab of the throttle, and up you'll go!

Air bags will be in my next Rover. This is the way of the future and the means to defeat the Transport Inspectors. Imagine their surprise as you raise or lower the settings, and they study their manuals to see if it complies with the National Code.
There are plenty of 'fixes' to the OME stuff - have a look at US Rover sites. Don't quite the air, you'll regret it! I want one. Mate of mine had one he basically treated as a mobile kennel for his large doggies, and despite 10 years of abuse it never let him down. Interior was trashed though! Amazing ride and standard articulation to die for
