Help about v8 in a hilux? or 75 series?

G'day all,

at the moment i am still trying to sell my vitara.

also, im toying with the idea of dropping a 350 small block into a lux.

can any one give me any advice, problems that may occur, costs, etc.

any help at all would be appreciated, i spoke to my mechanic, he reckons around $8k to convert, (does this sound right?)

any suggestion on what year lux would be ideal to do this mod to?

The Chev will be hard as the drivers side cylinder head in set back further than the passenger side. So it will hit the handbrake mechanism and prob the firewall. Where as the Holden V8 has the passenger side cylinder head set back so they fit well.

you could relocate the handbrake braket and pulley to the cabin side.

Marks does have a handbrake relocating kit.

If it was me I would be looking at a V6, better fit.
I have a 5.0lt EFI Holden V8 in my runner. It has plenty of power, but if I was to do it again I probably would go with a 4.3lt Chevy V6 EFI. Similar power output to a Holden v8 efi but a better fit.

Chris have you ever seen the Marks handbrake relocation kit?

I would like to know exactly what it does as my 4.4 actually hits the handbrake and if i could move it i could then move the engine back another inch and run an electric fan on the inside of the radiator rather than the outside.

Anyone got any pics of this?

I have never seen it. Marks do not have pictures of there products and even when you ask they refuse to supply one becuase you might copy it :roll:

Hand Brake Pulley Relocation Kit

When fitting Holden V8 engine the hand brake pulley located on the right hand side of the firewall will touch on the back of the cylinder head. Marks 4WD Adaptors manufacture a kit that relocates the handbrake bracket and pulley to the cabin side of the firewall.

Thanx for the pointers guys,

at this stage i still need to do a bit more research on the swaps, but also the possibility of swapping one into a 75 series.

does anyone know which would be cheaper, (i dont know too much yet but have the want to do this)

i dunno which i'd prefer yet?

as for the smaller v6 suggestion, although appreciate the thought, theres nothing like the sound of an 8 pumping around 200kw at the wheels!

probobly break shit but oh well?

There is a few 4ltr Lexus V8 coming in to country from JAPAN at the moment.The ones Ive seen are advertised as low klm for under 2k.The big benefit apart from keeping your rig all toyota is that they weigh only 180 kg and put out 140 +kw.I read someones elses experience with them and they said the difficult part was connecting the computer up.
These engines are the similar to the landcruiser 4.4ltr V8

the lexus motor was only released as an auto though so if you want manaul you have to get a fly wheel and clutch made up

at the moment the engine i will build with a mechanic i know, will have a few modifications done to it, like headwork, cam etc.

so basically i want a BIG phucken chev with a lot of Hp in a toyota!

i see a couple of older 75 series utes in the trading post pretty cheap, but being pretty inexperienced in 4wheeling, i dont know which would be the better rig?

i'm happy to put around $25-30k into it, so any suggestions?

Yep 75 series for sure. The hilux running gear isnt up to the task and also the 75 has a decent size engine bay so clearance wont be a problem.

A hilux with a V8 Chev is going to be nothing but headaches.

I run a Leyland 4.4 alloy V8 in my hilux and its tight enough. I wouldnt even bother trying to fit a V8 Chev.

Just a quick tip on the handbrake cable! Go grab a handbrake cable out of a RV6 surf. It runs on the inside of the cab. All is needed is a drilled hole further down :cool:

Easy done.

seems like the 75 series is a bit more of a tougher rig?
