Quieting Down Rock Hoppers

Post by Mud_Muncher »

I have series 3 in my Jimny that are very noisy. Is there any tricks to making them run a bit quieter at highway speeds, I cant here myself think! Thicker oil perhaps?

Thanks and regards,

How noisy is noisy?? Is it just noise, or are the bearings going.

When I put my new gears in, I was amazed how much quieter the box was. I replaced all the bearings , so maybe that's whats needed with yours.

Did you have to cut a hole in your floor at all? I ended up putting an extra piece of carpet around the boot-hole and double sealing the boot. Seemed to improve things greatly.

Turn up your stereo.

My Vit with rockhoppers is pretty quite just has a whine noise through the top gears.

My S1 had a very slight whine to them. My calmini's also havea very slight whine (though atm the t-case has a noisey bearing  ). I hardly noticed mine, and i have no interior or anything, just bare floor pan. See if you can compare yours to another. You may have a faulty bearing. How old are the gears, were the bearings replaced when you swaped gears. Remember that noise basically = wear. The more noise, the more wear so to speak.

they will make noise due to the way the gears are cut. Nothing much can be done to make them quieter, But you can make your cab quieter by using sound insulation products on the floor, firewall and doors to cut down on the noise entering the cab

Thanks all for your advice. I bought the car with the gears already in so I have nothing to compare it with. I have gone from a 3inch BL to a 1 inch, so the box is closer to the floor now so very noisy.

Then again it was quiet compared to my loose fan rattling and then the belt slipping off on the way to work :bad-words: . Good thing the boss doesnt turn up till 10-30 plenty time to fix in the company car park  .
