Rear Diff whine

Post by PJ.zook »

My rear diff is whining somewhat, it gets louder the faster you go. Also it mainly does it when under power and cruise, significantly quieter under deceleration.
Whats the most likely problem? Im thinkin pinion bearings cos i fitted a locker in it about 6months ago and backlash was fine then, but i didnt touch the pinion bearings.

Drop the oil, and see what its like. If its okay, no contamination, metal shards, water etc, fill her back up and see how it goes. You can try some of the diff adidive if you want, but this can be a band aid solution.

Sounds like mine except the cause of mine is t-case bearings. Thought it was the diff until I swapped the t-case and the noise went away. Now it's in the the other one

Well i replaced teh oil in everything but the engine today, the rear diff oil was grey indicating severe water contamination, hopefully the whine will now go away, i will change the oil again after the next trip.
Damn thing, i have a breather on the diff too, somehow water still got in.

Had a similar issue...changed the diff oil from milkshake to new, ran it for 1000k then changed it. No more whine. You need to make sure your seals are still good in the axle's and if changing go genuine.

I thought i had a whine in mine at about 60k's! But then i realised i had muddys on it!

Should go away with an oil change if there was no metal shavings and stuff in there!

The oil i use is Hino g/box oil from work so i can change it every trip if i could be bothered hehe, so dont really need a working breather anyway

If only i had your job!

My front diff gets water in EVERY time! Got a locker in the front so i need the thicker oil! Takes for ever to go in!

When the old stuff comes out dead set it's like the insides of a caramelow koala! :?

Try to invistigate this, as any water contamination will eventually damage the internals. How is it getting in, do you park your car in a creek :?: :D

Had the same problem. Changed the wheel bearings - no more whining noise.
