Have i gone mad, or am i on the road to enlightenment ?
Hi, Its definatly time to get rid of the 4runner. no arguments there.
But i have a patrol but i was thinking of trading the 4runner for a diesel Pajero aroundn the 10-15k mark. It'll live life mainly as a toorak tractor/ light tourer and trips down the hume hway. I have my old vege oil burning TD patrol for the good stuff and fishing trips away.
Looking at the forum it seems that the timing bet is a servicable issue and 5th gear can give trouble.
SO, in the real world what are these like to drive ?
How much diesel to they drink? on average, rough guide okay ?
will they hold speed on the hway unlike the 4runner ?
Im hoping for a car thats relaible and i dont have to turn a spanner on apart from serviceing, adn also need to be kid friendly.
SO, let it rip. Have i gone mad or am i on the path to enlightnment
Thanks,Guys

Depends on if you can get the 3.2 DiD for that kind of money. I am not sure what price they are, but should be the pick of the bunch in terms of Paj diesels.
Heaps of grunt.
Timing belts have to be done on every car so there is no getting around that....
Best bet is to take a spin in a few different ones (paj's that is) and get a feel for what you'll get for your money. See if you like it and go from there.

I have no idea on pricing for oz but I can say they are great to drive.
The seating position is waaaaay better than a 4runner, and dash layout etc
Serviced they willl run for a long time - same as anything I guess. They are not in the same league for ride comfort off road as your pootrol due to the hard IFS but by all accounts it'lll be right up with a surf.
For me the best things are the commanding seating position and over bonnet visibility.
Bad points - well they all relate to offroad so not really important to you - off road ride quality, low range gearing, limited front artic etc, but these rarely bother me too much as it goes most places I want to go.
But then again I guess I am biased.

I wouldn't buy a 3.2 for 15k, I'd say you're looking at a 2.8 itd for that money.pongo wrote:But i have a patrol but i was thinking of trading the 4runner for a diesel Pajero aroundn the 10-15k mark. Cracked heads can be an issue, I'm fairly certain they're a timing chain, and the 5th gear reputation applies an earlier gearbox. Read this for a little more info.
The engine has a reputation for reasonable performance, but economy has never been a strong point. On the highway, I would expect 12 - 14l/100km, depending on conditions. I would hope they'll perform better than a 4runner - everywhere. For light touring, I reckon they're ideal.pongo wrote:SO, in the real world what are these like to drive ?

Like any vehicle, you can find lemons - but I believe they're generally pretty reliable when they're well looked after.
Just do it!

Went and had a look at a 95 and 96 model today.
Absolutly loved them, heaps of room and can actually see out of the windscreen.
The 95 had 255 k and seemed to have a bit of turbo lag. when we drove the 96 it was beuatiful. no lag plenty of power,
These interc diesels actually acceleratee at 130km hour.
Tried for finance today for the 96 model glx 2.8 diesel. Has been a town car. no bullbar or 4wd acces any where.
Well see tommorrow

Got a '94 ITD, 365000km, still going strong, low 10s (sometimes high 9s) on the highway, high 11s low 12s around town (and country -live about 15 km out of town), easily do an annual 400 to 500km round trip into into Wonnangatta Station loaded up to the hilt. Set of glow plugs at about 60000km and ..........can't think of anything major. Had the injectors done at 300000km for little change in performance or economy, still on the origanal clutch............

I can't believe it either - it's news to me! Where did this information come from?pongo wrote:I couldnt believe it when i found out there an izuzu engine.
The oil senders have a reputation for dying. They start reading low, then stop. I wouldn't buy from a wrecker - try Repco etc.pongo wrote:one thing though, the oil gauges inboth cars in the centre of the dash didnt work. must be a common prob ?

izuzu's have a very distingtive rattle.
pity u can't get power chips for the 2.8 there sort of at there limit all ready of what u can dop to them for more power

Not really. A member of the Qld Mistu Club had a "tweaked" 2.8. One club trip, on a beach, he lined up against a shorty Paj with a 3.8 Commodore V6. From a standing start, the diesel led until sanity prevailed.known 2 wrote:pity u can't get power chips for the 2.8 there sort of at there limit all ready of what u can dop to them for more power
I imagine boost & fuel were cranked up, but I don't know what else.
A freind of ours has a NL 2.8 SWB manual and it has been tweaked - the most notable is a full front mount intercooler which is quite a feat, the bonnet latch and everything needed to be moved to fit it in. Boost levels were hardly changed, all the inlet manifold had been opened up etc etc.
The throttle response was awesome (for a turbo diesel) at low rpm.
Just to show he's not bias he has a 2.8 94 one as well with a bigger top mount 34 in super swampers and higher boost and also a 3.2Did for the road.......
