can i change the transfer gears in situ?

I'm fairly sure a mate of mine has done it, the trick is wriggling the high range gear past the intermediate gear - he reckons it can be done, and his was an 87 or 88.... That said, you can't do it in a defender transfer case, as high range is 1.4 instead of 1.2, and the gear appears to be just a little bigger.
84 Rangie, 3 inch spring lift, 2 inch body, Megasquirted 4.6, R380, rear Maxi, 34x11.5 JT2s. Simex FM installed.
Hour or so to drop, a day to refit. Done mine once or twice too.cooter wrote:would be easier to drop just the transfer case have done on mine a few times

Seriously though, for the hassle of working under the vehicle, I'd just drop the transfer. then you can get a good look at everything in the process. Wouldn't you be pissed if you dropped a gear set out to change, and a month later all the other bearings crapped themselves.
Just take note of where the bolts came from, it'd be a real PIA if you put one that was too long in the wrong place, and chipped a couple of teeth......
