which diffs under a sierra?

hi all i have the chance to buy a damaged 89 sierra real cheap

and being a landcruiser man i happen to have a spare set off cruiser diffs
layin around ,

when i did a search there was 99% mention of hilux diffs used and sfa about cruiser diffs

now what my question is am i better off to use the cruiser diffs or am i better off to use hilux diffs ?


is there a reason for the prefered use of hlux diffs compared to the cruiser diff ?

oh yeah its a 89 mod 1.3 jx its got flexiglass canopy n roof
hopefully that makes it a good model :roll:

Dont worry about the weight. Its all unsprung. Id much rather have the weight down low as it will aid stability. Diff clearance is negligible (nothing a shave wont fix) and you will struggle to break stuff running 33s or 35s.

The hilux spring perches are pretty close to matching straight up with the zook springs whereas the cruiser ones are a bit wider and will probably need to be chopped and re-welded. Not positive on this though. Of course all of this is neatly avoided once you decide to link and coil the zook :twisted:
I would probably prefer the cruiser diffs due to the fact that the rear pumpkin is offset like the orig sierra pumpkin so driveline issues will be minimal. The cruiser diffs are also wider than the lux.

By the way, its a zook, they're all good models :armsup:

Cruiser diffs are larger than Hilux diffs meaning that you have less diff clearance or that you need bigger tyres.

75 series diffs, 60 series diffs also run the same CV as hilux. So you still have the same weak point but one with more clearance than the other.

Cruisers generally have stronger centres than Hilux, however its only behind a 1.3ltr 4cyl engine so either way.

Do most people that use hilux diffs go SOA?? If so, i think its cause the spring perch mounts are already on the top-side of the diff (cause hilux's are SOA)- therefore theres no cutting or welding to get the SOA. Cruisers are normally SUA, so you'd have to convert them over.

What other mods are you planing ? Swoping axles ( diffs, are the gears in the middle you weld up) is usely a long way down the heavly mod track, after you slot in the 3.8litre.

thanks for the info guys , it a big help

as for other mods not sure yet ,will get it home this sat and need to fix some front end damage n go from there

i did like the look of was it chopzuki's white little beast , the exo cage huge tyres and a shit load of flex

I have seen hilux diffs SUA, and cruiser diffs SOA. Its all personal prefrence as to how you mount the springs. Of and just cause the diffs are already soa, does not mean that the spacing between the spring pads is the same, so there will be welding in some cases. From memory hilux needs changing.

I think the dude has 80s diffs and coils under his 40. I think he can handle doing cruiser diffs under a zook.

Lux spring pads are close in the front anyway rear I dunno ..
With some prying you can actualy bolt Zuk springs up to the lux pads, but you will chew out bushes .. you would be better off outboarding the Zuk spring hanger the extra half inch to get em to liine up and perhaps swapping to lux springs at the same time as they are longer and flexier.

You will also need to look at the $$$ nessecary to fix up the steering as the steering arms on a Lux diff will not be compatible with the Zuki steering box (or any other steering box to think of it ) So some $$ will be needed there .. minimum of $150 to get you a superior welded double arm ... or more like 700 or more for proper crossover.
