Is a the R380 fitted to a diesel different to a petrol one?

Is a the R380 fitted to a diesel different to a petrol one?
Talking about a 1996 300TDi that has an R380 already.
Just wondering if a R380 out of a V8 car will fit up?
What are the differences, if any?
Thanks!

Hmm, any way to tell if the engine (and more importantly) and gearbox are from a Defender rather than a Disco?
I was curious about the R380 as I have a rebuilt V8 one that I was contemplating putting in, but this is not going to happen!
Got to get a new clutch kit and don't want to end up with the wrong bits. Unless the flywheel, clutch and pressure plates are all the same in the 300TDi powered cars?

Clutch kit should be the same for all 300 AFAIK. It is possible to tell the difference between disco/defender boxes - the difference is in the selector mechanism. Can't remember what the difference is at the moment though... anyone else?up2nogood wrote:Hmm, any way to tell if the engine (and more importantly) and gearbox are from a Defender rather than a Disco?

might be that the defender one has a flattened out splined part at the bottom of the gear lever, and is held down by a nut (ie. early LT77 style) while I believe the disco is held on by a bolt which goes horizontally through the bottom of the shifter, and locates in a nick out of the side of the bit of shifter sticking up from the box, like a steering uni (minus the splines)....
IE. A defender box will likely have a splined section on the stub sticking up from the box, and a disco will have a smooth shaft with a nick taken out of it.

Defender engine numbers start with 16L.up2nogood wrote:Hmm, any way to tell if the engine (and more importantly) and gearbox are from a Defender rather than a Disco?
Discovery manual is 18L, auto is 20L.
You can tell by the gearbox prefix what it was fitted to originally but I don't have that info to hand.

Well that's a good start, as It's a 16L. So it's out of a Defender then. Now to identify the 'box............ Be great if you could dig out those numbersScouse wrote:Defender engine numbers start with 16L.up2nogood wrote:Hmm, any way to tell if the engine (and more importantly) and gearbox are from a Defender rather than a Disco?

While we're at it, does anyone know the numbers that would tell me if it's a Disco or Defender transfer case?

55A = Tdi Disco
56A = Defender
22D = Defender according to the parts list but I don't have the numbers for Disco.While we're at it, does anyone know the numbers that would tell me if it's a Disco or Defender transfer case?
The Ashcroft site is very comprehensive so you shouldn't have too many troubles now anyway.
