Pod Filters.. a few questions

hi

I will have my car back Monday after lpg is fitted and it has a cheap Sass pod filter on it..

The car is a Ford Maverick Tb42 turbo..

I'm pretty sure the only thing i can use is a pod filter but what happens if it gets rained on or when hosing the engine bay and it gets wet?

Well i thought i could make a box for it and dirrect the air into the air box from the front of the car but then whats happens when it's rainning really really hard and the filter gets wet as ?


What other options do i have or is a pod filter okay?

Whats brand is a good brand K&N the best around?

if your going to build a box around it, why not use a proper airbox with a decent filter in it? see the airbox thread in the nissan area.

Are you going to fit a snorkel down the track?

You could adapt an airbox from another vehicle if the stock one doesn't fit.

well the stock filter box i have goes on my carby which is gone and on my garage floor as now it got Gas Research..

I was thinking about a vr air box that goes in the wheel arch .. but then i have to put a pd isnide that or something..

scrap the "POD", and go with a normal air filter.
Do you have room behind the passengers headlight still? thats where you can fit a GU box easily, run the snorkel straight into that.

don't have a snorkle i have room on that side but behind the headlight is a oil catch can and radaitor overflow bottle..




There is a fir amount of room behind them though

You would be best to run an OEM airbox with a panel filter... dont wory about a pod filter.

You could put it behind them cans, and ready for a snorkel later

with my current set up there isnt enough room to fit any normal airbox that will flow enough air so i have a pod inside a square box with a 3 inch inlet hole just near the snorkel hole in the inner gaurd.
if i could i would change to a large panel filter setup but no room atm.

ps ive never had dramas with water etc

go to a wrecker and get a ford el air box, i have this in my other car and its large enough to fit a pod easily then make a custom 3" air pipe to your intake, easy then u can snorkel and seal down the track

What about the old school type air boxes, u know the ones that hold the large ring type filter and go directly on top of the carby??

Well ,y caby is gone now..

I'll have a gas resarch throttle body on my manifold then a pipe going from there to my turbo ..

I was thinking along the lines of getting some sort of air box happening then put the pod inside that .. but i still have the prob of a really dusty road/ heavy rain (QLD tropical rain) ...

I mean i don't mind spending the $$$ to get something that will work well but i'm won't be putting a snorkle on the car at the moment or maybe ever ..

I just thought maybe someone brand of pod filter is good enough to stick in a air box and if it did get wet it wouldn't hurt it's performance and also didn't allow a grain of dirt through..

I had this problem with my car, not enough room for a panel filter, went and brought a K&N pod filter (3 inch outlet).

Then brought plumbers pvc piping (white stuff) with a screw on end cap, cut a 3" hole in the cap so the filter goes inside the pipe, and got fittings for the other end to reduce it back to 3" again... all sealed up with sika-flex..

Works a treat!!!

Oh yeah, it runs back to a snorkel as well... So its all water tight!!

I've got a pod on the 80 in a cutom box behind the right headlight, if you go a pod just make sure you do your best to protect it from hot air. Never had a problem with water yet nor dust- and it does ALOT of country/dirt roads. If your washing or hosing the engine just tie a plastic bag on it.

As for brands no K&N is not the best from what I have read regarding intake testing, some of the cheaper versions out perform the expensive ones. If i find the article i will post the results up. It also depends on the 'type' of pod you go for and what it is made from.

i have one on the V8 that i put inside a PVC tube and routed it to the snorkel. Works good, and doesn't restrict the air flow that i am aware of... there is no loss in performance.

Love the air filter box you made mate looks bloody neat as !!

And Aussiecj7 were did you get that price from as that looks like a bloody good unit there as it would just bolt in and then cut hole next the headlight were the intercooler pipe would go thru for the time being untill the cooler goes on..

Is that a T3? Do you know the trim and A/R of the housings?

I don't know the specs of the turbo other then it's a T4 watercooled core with t4 housing with a T3 exhuast housing..

Can't wait to drive it hope it blows me away with the power

Well had a look at my brothers VR airbox and i'm pretty sure i could mount it up some how .. he has a pannel filter inside his airbox.. would that give better filtration over a pof filter?

Would it be better ti use one of those Uni ram pods or something maybe?

I mean my old engine got it's air from the wheel arch for 420,000KMS and never had a problem and the air went to a pizza type filter on top of the carby though..

So would a pannel filter work better then a pod?

Would a VR airbox be the only one that would fit the best?

What would u suggest i do get good filtration ?

By the way i don't wanna fit a snorkle at this point in time maybe down the track a bit..
