my clutch has progressively been getting worse. now i have lost all pressure and can find a gear. the fluid level was right down, so i filled it up and pumped the peddle a few time (hoping this would fix the issue), but nothing.
its a 88 petrol gq.
can anyone help with this one?

Check for a fluid leak. Sounds like it has lost lots of fluid, and got an air lock in it. Try bleeding it out and seeing how it feels. Check for leaks round the slave cylinder seals.

my bet is slave cylinder
but replace both slave and master and do a full bleed cos if one goes chances are the other will follow closely and they dont cot too much

Its the same as bleeding brakes except theres only 1 bleed nipple to worry about. Bleeder nipple should be on the slave cylinder. Get someone to operate the clutch pedal while you're underneath on the slave. Make sure master is full and crack bleed nipple (bit of clear hose on the nipple going into a bottle so you dont make a mess is a good idea here). Get them to pump the clutch pedal while you are watching the hose. Once you get a clear stream of fluid (no bubbles) get them to hold their foot down. Top up master cylinder. Close the bleeder. Foot up. Open bleeder then foot down to make sure there is still no bubbles. If all is good then close the bleeder and foot up and make sure the master is full again. Test drive.
NB, if you run out of fluid in the master while you are bleeding then you will suck more air into the system so make sure you have fluid in the master at all times.

sometimes all you have to do is remove the nipple on the slave and the fluid will just flow from the master down to the slave. Just keep teh master fluid level up. when you get clen fluid coming out of the slave just put the nipple back in and tighten.
This is all I did on my 80 and various other cars I've had over the years.
(They have all bee toyota's, the Datsun's might be different).

ok. i have just bled the slave and had minor success. but not enouh unfortunately.
when the pedal was pumped the clutch would go right down and not come back up. got the other guy to push the pedal slowly, pedal got stuck down, topped up the master, pedal up. did this twice.
i have now been able to engage a gear! with is good. the there is very little pressure in the clutch.
would replacement of the master and slave be recomemded here? or is there something else i can do.
chucky, i might try it your way and see what happens.

The clutch pedal getting stuck at the bottom is fairly normal. Just use your hand to bring it back up. The bigest question is where is the fluid going? Did you see fluid leaking from the slave? If not, check the master. Have a look at the master from inside the cabin where the clutch pedal rod connects to it. If the slave is dry then you will most likely find the master is wet on the cabin side. I would just replace both and be done with it as they shouldnt be very expensive brand new aftermarket.
Hope this helps.

If after you bleed it, with the slave nipple closed, the pedal stays on the floor it is most likely your master.
I had this problem with my 80 series. When pushed in the clutch barely worked and would stay on the floor, if you lifted with your foot you could again change gears.
I bought a new master and all was good.
